University of Arizona Head Women’s Basketball Coach Adia Barnes has been named as the WHoopDirt.com NCAA D1 Coach of the Year presented by Pivot Analysis for the 2020-21 college basketball season. Barnes qualified for the award by being named as the WHoopDirt.com/Pivot Analysis Coach of the Week for Week 2 of the season.
Coach Barnes led Arizona on a historic run this season, culminating in the program’s first-ever National Championship Game appearance. The Wildcats went 21-6 (13-4 Pac-12) on the season, surpassing the 20-win mark for the third time in Barnes’ five seasons with the program. Arizona was ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation this year – the highest ranking in school history – and was rewarded with its first NCAA Tournament berth since the 2005 season, though it would have qualified had there been an NCAA Tournament last year.
Arizona advanced past the Sweet 16 for the first time ever this season. The Wildcats’ win over UConn in the Final Four marked the first time the program had ever beaten a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament. They almost replicated the feat just two days later, coming up a basket shy of a National Championship victory over No. 1 Stanford.
In her five seasons leading her alma mater, Coach Barnes has amassed 89 wins, the most of any coach through their first five seasons in program history. This year, Barnes was named a finalist for the WBCA Coach of the Year award, and a semifinalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year award. She holds a career record of 89-66 (.574).
