For Immediate Release
April 12, 2021

Lubbock Christian University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Steve Gomez has been named as the WHoopDirt.com NCAA D2 Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year presented by Pivot Analysis for the 2020-21 college basketball season. Gomez qualified for the award by being named as the WHoopDirt.com/Pivot Analysis Coach of the Week for Week 14 of the season.

This year, Coach Gomez guided Lubbock Christian to a perfect season, going 23-0 and capturing the program’s third National Championship since the 2015-16 season. The Lady Chaps won all but two contests by double-digits, and nine of their victories came by 30 or more points.

On their way to the National Championship, Coach Gomez’s squad picked up their second LSC Tournament title in just their second season in the conference. The Lady Chaps extended their NCAA Division II-record home winning streak to 91 games with the LSC Championship victory – a 78-57 defeat of Texas A&M-Commerce. Lubbock Christian took home its second consecutive National Title, as there was no championship last year, with a 69-59 triumph over Drury. Since becoming a full Division II member prior to the 2015-16 season, LCU has gone 20-1 in postseason play under Coach Gomez.

Having gone 35-0 in 2015-16’s National Championship season, LCU has become the first team in Division II history to put together two undefeated seasons culminating in a National Title.  In the eight seasons since leaving the NAIA, Coach Gomez’s teams have gone 214-29. Gomez has compiled an extremely impressive career record of 448-125 in his 18 seasons at LCU.
