Glenville State College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Kim Stephens has been named as the WHoopDirt.com NCAA D2 Coach of the Year presented by Capital Elite Agency for the 2021-22 college basketball season. Stephens qualified for the award by being named as the WHoopDirt.com/Capital Elite Agency Coach of the Week in Week 12 of the season.
Coach Stephens guided Glenville State to a 35-1 record this season, culminating with the program’s first ever NCAA D2 National Championship. The Lady Pioneers defeated Western Washington by a score of 85-72 to capture the title, capping off an incredible NCAA Tournament in which they outscored opponents by an average of 25.8 points per game. Stephens’ squad also set the record for most points in the NCAA Division II Tournament, scoring 524 points over six contests.
Glenville State ran through the MEC during the regular season, going 22-0 before taking its only loss in the MEC Championship game. The Lady Pioneers again led the nation in scoring under Coach Stephens, astonishingly marking the sixth time in her six-year tenure that Glenville State accomplished this feat. They averaged 95.8 points per game this season, while no other program averaged more than 82.3.
In her six years with Glenville State, Coach Stephens has put together a record of 158-21 (.883), including an unbelievable 109-11 (.908) mark in conference play. She has been chosen as the MEC Coach of the Year three times already and was recently honored for her efforts this year as the WBCA Division II Coach of the Year.
