WEEK 9: WHoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions

Congratulations to the following coaches who have been selected as the Week 9 WHoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Just Play Solutions. These coaches are now eligible to receive the WHoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year Award presented by Just Play Solutions which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2022-23 college basketball season.

This is the fourth season that WHoopDirt.com has run the Coach of the Week and Coach of the Year programs. The list of 2022-23 Coach of the Week winners, as well as previous Coach of the Year winners can be found below this week’s recipients

The Week 9 winners are:


NCAA D1: Kevin McGuff – Ohio State

Weekly Record (Overall): 2-0 (17-0)
Past week’s results: 83-71 W at Minnesota, 87-81 W vs RV Illinois.
Highlights: Two more Big Ten wins last week for McGuff’s squad keep them atop the league standings at 6-0, and improve the #3 Buckeyes overall record to 17-0. Sunday’s win vs Illinois was the largest second half comeback in program history for OSU, as they were down 17 with 6:47 remaining before rallying for the 87-81 win.

NCAA D2: Kari Pickens – Ashland University

Weekly Record (Overall): 2-0 (16-0)
Past week’s results: 90-60 W vs Cedarville, 98-67 W at Northwood.
Highlights: Pickens #1 Eagles have won at least 16 straight games to start a season for the first time since 2019-20, and for the fifth time since 2015-16. They are currently 8-0 in the GMAC, and one of only 3 undefeated teams left in D2. The NCAA D2 leaders in FG% shot a program record 66.7% from the field in Saturday’s win.

NCAA D3: Keri Carollo – Wisconsin-Whitewater

Weekly Record (Overall): 2-0 (12-3)
Past week’s results: 55-52 W vs UW Stevens Point, 79-69 W at #9 UW Eau Claire.
Highlights: Carollo’s #17 picked up two more WIAC wins last week to increase their winning streak to 5. After coming back from a first quarter deficit to open the week vs UWSP, Whitewater went on the road to upset #9 UW Eau Clair in a top 25 match-up.

NAIA: Mike Davis – Central Methodist University

Weekly Record (Overall): 3-0 (14-0)
Past week’s results: 91-71 W at Haskell, 69-50 W at Benedictine (KS), 104-63 W at Peru State.
Highlights: Three wins on the road last week for Davis and his 4th ranked Eagles to open the new year. CMU now moves to 8-0 in the Heart of America Conference, and are 8-0 on the road. With some losses ahead of them in the rankings, the Eagles look to move into the top 2 or 3 in this week’s NAIA poll.

JUCO: Angelica de Paulo – Eastern Arizona College

Weekly Record (Overall): 2-0 (15-0)
Past week’s results: 72-66 W at Mesa CC, 68-44 W at South Mountain CC.
Highlights: The NJCAA D1 #10 Gila Monsters opened 2023 with two wins on the road to push their winning streak to 15 and remain unbeaten on the season. They are also 8-0 in conference play, 8-0 at home, and 7-0 on the road.
