Monmouth University has named Ginny Boggess as the ninth head women’s basketball coach in program history. A 17-year coaching veteran, Boggess comes to West Long Branch after serving the last two seasons as the assistant coach and head recruiting coordinator at Penn State.
Boggess will be formally introduced during a virtual press conference at 4:00 PM today, hosted at YouTube.com/MonmouthHawks. Media members will be contacted with a Zoom link.
“I am very excited to welcome Ginny Boggess as the ninth Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Monmouth University,” said Monmouth President Dr. Patrick Leahy. “She impressed every member of the University community with whom she met during the process and left no doubt that she was the perfect fit for this program and University. Her extensive experience at mid-major programs in the area, coupled with her recent success at the highest levels of Division I, will produce student-athletes that perform with excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community. It is my belief that Monmouth should be one of the premier women’s basketball programs in the Northeast, and Coach Boggess is the right person to lead us there.”
At State College, Boggess helped develop the Penn State guards, including Kamaria McDaniel who earned First Team All-Big Ten honors as the conference’s second-leading scorer with an average of 19.8 points per game in 2019-20.
Last season, Boggess helped guide Maddie Burke to Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year honors, while Johnasia Cash and Makenna Marisa both earned All-Big Ten accolades.
“I am so grateful to President Leahy, Dr. McNeil, Jeff Stapleton, and Jennifer White-Lawlor for the opportunity to represent Monmouth University as Head Women’s Basketball Coach,” said Boggess. “I promise to continue the tradition of excellence in the classroom and community while building a championship culture. The incredible academic reputation in addition to elite facilities and a location loaded with girls basketball talent made Monmouth the perfect fit. I can’t wait to get started!”
A native of Hamlin, West Virginia, Boggess began her collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kennesaw State. After one year as a GA, she was promoted to an assistant coach.
From 2006-2008, Boggess was an assistant coach at Hofstra University. She helped recruit Shante Evans, who would later become the program’s all-time leading scorer.
From Hofstra, she went to Jacksonville University and spent five seasons as assistant coach and co-recruiting coordinator. Boggess was responsible for the recruitment of Sherranda Reddick, who became Jacksonville’s all-time leading scorer. She also recruited and developed the 2013 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year in Queen Alford and the 2012 Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year in Crystal Bell.
Boggess served as an assistant coach at Columbia University from 2013-14, with a major singing of Chamille Zimmerman, who registered the most points and rebounds in program history.
Before her time at Penn State, Boggess spent five years as an assistant coach at Marquette. She helped guide the Golden Eagles to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances. The program registered a 76-26 record (43-11 in Big East), which included a pair of Big East regular-season championships and a Big East Tournament Championship. Marquette advanced to the NCAA round of 32 in her last two seasons.
At Marquette, Boggess recruited the duo of Allazia Blockton and Natisha Hiedeman, who went on to earn Big East Player of the Year honors in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Blockton graduated as the all-time leading scorer in men’s and women’s basketball history at Marquette and earned back-to-back Big East Scholar Athlete of the Year honors in 2018 and 2019. Hiedeman was selected as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, and currently plays for the Connecticut Sun.
Boggess graduated from Wingate University in 2003, averaging 10 points and five rebounds as a four-year starter. She earned South Atlantic Conference awards, both on and off the court. Boggess was selected to the All-Rookie team as a freshman and earned a spot on the conference’s academic honor roll all four years. During her sophomore campaign, Wingate received a bid to the 2001 NCAA Division II Tournament.
“I am really pleased to have Ginny on board as our Head Women’s Basketball Coach,” said Monmouth Deputy Director of Athletics Jeff Stapleton. “After a nation-wide search that included a multitude of excellent choices, it was clear that she was our top candidate. She has an impressive recruiting track record at both a Big East and a Big 10 school and I am confident she is the right woman to resurrect our women’s basketball program. In addition to her being a tireless recruiter, she has displayed an outstanding ability to develop players. Getting to know her these past few weeks, it is clear that she is determined and her infectious personality is a great match for our players and this University’s desire to be a top mid-major program.”
