Coming off the best season in her tenure as head coach at the University of New Orleans, head women’s basketball coach Keeshawn Davenport inked a new deal, keeping her on the Lakefront through the 2020-2021 campaign.
A 14 win 2016-17 season and 9-9 mark in Southland Conference play, the Privateers reached the conference tournament for the first time since joining the Southland in 2013. Coming up the ranks from UNO student-athlete, assistant and currently head coach, she returns a veteran group in 2017-18.
“There is no one who cares more for our university than Keeshawn,” said Director of Athletics Derek Morel. “During her 20 years as a Privateers student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach, she has maintained a positive and uplifting attitude and demonstrated unmatched loyalty to our university. We believe in Keeshawn and anticipate many more successful seasons under her leadership.”
The Reserve, Louisiana product was a four-year letter winner at UNO, capping off a sensational Privateer career as a co-captain her senior season. She also earned her master’s degree from UNO in psychosocial aspects of sport and exercise.
A graduate of East St. John High School, Davenport will enter her seventh season as head coach at her alma mater.
“I am very grateful to President Nicklow and AD Morel for their continued support and confidence,” said Davenport. “Our program made great strides but I believe the best is yet to come.”
The Privateers will open the 2017-18 season in the Preseason WNIT, Friday, November 10 in Lafayette, Louisiana against the UL Lafayette Ragin Cajuns. The full schedule will be released at a later date on UNOPrivateers.com.
