SFU assistant resigns

Simon Fraser University assistant women’s basketball coach Courtney Gerwing has decided to vacate her position following the 2012-13 season.

"It’s time for me to try something else,” said Gerwing. “I’ve enjoyed my time at SFU. The opportunity to play and have success, then come back and coach the team during the transition to the NCAA has been great. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some good people and my experience at SFU will help me as I move on to the next chapter of my life."

After completing her playing career, Gerwing spent a year coaching in Ontario University Athletics with the University of Waterloo Warriors before returning to Burnaby Mountain to re-join the Clan for the 2010-11 season.

"It has been good to have an ex-player of Courtney’s character come back and work with our athletes,” said Head Coach Bruce Langford. “She has contributed immensely to our success and done a particularly good job of handling our strength and conditioning where we have shown great improvements.”

Her first season as the Clan’s assistant coach was SFU’s first competing in the NCAA when the Clan women finished 7-17. Gerwing helped the Clan improve to 17-11 in 2011-12 and to a 20-4 record so far in 2012-13.

Gerwing played for the Clan from 2004-05 through the 2008-09 seasons. In that time, she was part of three CIS Championship teams.

“As she heads off to explore other life experiences, we thank her and wish her the best of luck knowing that she will always maintain a close connection to SFU women’s basketball,” finished Langford.
