Massasoit Community College Hires Head Coach

She has been a college women’s basketball coach at four schools in New Jersey, Arkansas and Missouri since 2010.

Nicole “Colie” Trawick is moving to Massachusetts this month to become the head coach at Massasoit Community College.

The Willingboro, N.J., native is taking over for Brockton native Taryn Johnson, who resigned to become the director of basketball operations at Fairfield University.

Trawick will make her debut Nov. 5 against Springfield Tech with a team that includes several key returning players from a squad that went 9-15, an eight-win improvement from the previous season.

“I understand it’s a program that’s developing,’’ said Trawick, who will also be working as a program director at the Boys and Girls Club of Brockton. “Taryn Johnson did some great things. She had a young team last year and I’m excited because almost all of the players are back plus eight students coming in.

“It’ll be the first time the program is starting out with 15 players, and I want to make sure it doesn’t drop down any lower than 10 or 12 kids.’’

After graduating from college, Trawick became an assistant coach at Burlington County, a junior college in New Jersey, from 2010-12, and was an assistant from 2012-14 at Central Methodist University, a NAIA Division 1 school in Missouri.

She was an assistant at Arkansas-Monticello, a Division 2 school, in 2014-15, and was the head coach at the College of Saint Elizabeth in New Jersey last season. At Massasoit, Trawick is looking forward to building her own program.

“Talking with (director of athletics) Julie Mulvey and the committee during the interview process, they let me know this is a blank slate,’’ said Trawick. “You can kind of create this program in the vision you want to. You can mold it and take it where you want to take it.

“I’m ready to settle down. I’m not new to this coaching journey. I’m seven years in, so I’m not as quick to want to leave and go to different places. I think this is really a good fit for me.

“I’m definitely excited about that journey and building a program and making it consistent.’’

Trawick played basketball at Bluefield State College in West Virginia before transferring to South Carolina-Upstate where she also played soccer, then earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Belhaven University in Mississippi in 2010.

She also has a master’s degree in education and athletics administration from Central Methodist.

“I love coaching and I love basketball,’’ said Trawick. “I love athletics in general. I think it does so much to make you a better person overall, especially when you’re in college and trying to figure things out.

“I like working with the young ladies, seeing them grow and develop over time. I like to say they come in as young ladies and they leave as young women out of the program. Being part of that development is the most rewarding part of the job.’’
