HOT: Coaching change at Kansas Wesleyan

Kansas Wesleyan Athletic Director Dave Dallas is pleased to announce Ryan Showman as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Showman, most recently an assistant for the Coyotes, succeeds Gordon Reimer, who recently submitted his resignation. Reimer cited personal family matters for his departure from Wesleyan.

Reimer spent eight seasons leading the Coyote basketball program, and three years leading the volleyball program at Kansas Wesleyan. He relinquished the volleyball coaching position following the 2006 volleyball season. He was 140-105 overall, a 57.1 percent winning percentage, an 84-60 mark in the KCAC during that same time span.

Reimer was hired by former athletic director Jerry Jones prior to the start of the 2004-05 season, with the goal of turning the program around into a Kansas Conference champion.

In 2008-09, he won Wesleyan’s first KCAC Championship since 1987-88 and led the Coyotes to their first ever appearance in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Division II National Championships. Reimer’s Coyotes returned to the National Championships in 2009-10, and won a second KCAC Championship in 2010-11, and made a third straight appearance in the NAIA National Championships, finishing that season with a 31-3 record. The 31 wins are the most by any basketball program, men or women, in Kansas Wesleyan history.

Reimer was named KCAC Coach of the Year and Kansas Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2009, and has coached one KCAC Player of the Year, four NAIA All-Americans and 11 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes during his tenure. His teams set over 20 school records.

Showman brings plenty of experience to the head position; he became Reimer’s assistant during the 2007-08 season. During his tenure as assistant coach, Wesleyan went 110-47 overall and 68-22 in the KCAC. Showman also led the Wesleyan golf programs from 2007 to 2009.

"We have the utmost confidence in Coach Showman," said Dallas. "Gordon Reimer set the bar high for our women’s basketball program and we know that Coach Showman will continue to build upon that foundation."

Showman graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation from KWU in 2004 and earned his Master of Science in Physical Education from Emporia State in 2008. Showman was a three year letter winner on the men’s basketball team under coach Jerry Jones. Showman has taught extensively in the Salina school district, first teaching physical education at Schilling Elementary and most recently as the physical education teacher at Heusner Elementary.

"Coach Reimer did great things for our program and I hope to continue that tradition," said Showman. "I will continue to focus on bringing out the best in our student athletes and winning basketball games at KWU."
