Onondaga Community College Athletic Director, Michael Borsz, has announced that Kelly Grinnell-Seibt will take over as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at OCC. Grinnell-Seibt’s promotion follows the resignation of Mike Wheeler. Wheeler compiled a record of 462-121 during his time with the program. He will continue to aid the college in his role as an Enrollment Associate.
“I want to congratulate and thank Mike Wheeler for his nearly 2 decades of service to our program and his tireless effort in building and leading our championship-caliber women’s basketball program, said Borsz. Our women’s basketball teams have been very successful during his tenure, winning multiple MSAC and Region III championships and competing for the NJCAA national championship. His teams not only competed on the basketball court, but were always very engaged and strong academically too. Mike will remain at the College in his Enrollment Associate position and will continue helping all students the best he can.”
Wheeler knows the program is in good hands with Grinnell-Seibt as he states, “I look forward to my former player and Assistant Coach Kelly Grinnell-Seibt becoming the next head coach. I have worked with Kelly for the past 7 years and without a doubt, she will continue the success of our women’s basketball program.”
The high praise for Grinnell-Seibt continues as Borsz says “Kelly Grinnell-Seibt brings a wealth of knowledge, energy, and experience to our program. She has gained great experience under the guidance of Coach Wheeler and I know she is ready to lead our program into the next era of OCC women’s basketball. I’m excited to welcome Coach Grinnell-Seibt to her new role – I know she will do great things for our students and program.”
Grinnell-Seibt has been an assistant on Wheeler’s staff for the past seven years and spent a season as a player for the Lazers during the 2010-2011 season. Her collegiate basketball journey began at Robert Wesleyan, where she earned a spot on the American Mideast Conference All-Freshman Team. From there she transferred to OCC where she helped the team win a Mid-State Athletic Conference championship and Region III tournament runner up finishing with a 29-3 record. She finished her collegiate career at SUNY Brockport where she started every game and scored over 300 points as a golden eagle.
In 2014 she made her return to OCC when she was named an assistant coach for the Lazers women’s basketball program. She helped the Lazers to a 160-35 record, including 5 Mid-State Atlantic Conference championships, and a Region III championship.
“Onondaga has always felt like home to me. Although I only spent my sophomore year as a student-athlete at OCC, I am forever grateful that I decided to transfer here,” says Grinnell-Seibt. “It has been a dream of mine to become a head coach of a program, and to be able to do it at Onondaga makes it even more special.”
“I have learned so much from playing and coaching under previous head coach Mike Wheeler. Over the last 20 seasons, Coach Wheeler has built this program from the ground up and created a culture of pursuing success on and off the court. He set a precedent for the future of this program, and I am so excited that I get to continue what he started.”
