Kennebec Valley Community College has hired Greg Chesley as the new head coach of the Lynx women’s basketball program.
Chesley joins KVCC following 15 years at Lawrence High School, including nine seasons as head coach of the Lawrence girls’ basketball team. During his time with the Bulldogs, Chesley compiled a 140-41 record and led the program to five regional final appearances and two state championships.
His players earned numerous individual honors during his tenure, including First Team and Second Team All-Conference selections, All-State and All-Academic honors, two Maine Girls Basketball Players of the Year, two Gatorade Players of the Year, and numerous additional academic and athletic awards.
Chesley said family considerations played an important role in his decision to step away from the high school coaching schedule. Shortly after stepping down, he was contacted by Athletic Director Rusty Mercier about the opportunity to join the Lynx program.
“When Coach Mercier reached out to me about becoming a member of the Lynx family, it really felt like a great fit,” Chesley said. “The limited summer commitment and extended time off during Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks provide an opportunity that works well for my family while allowing me to continue doing something I love.”
The opportunity also provides Chesley with the chance to help build a growing collegiate athletics program. “Not only is it a great fit, but it is a great opportunity,” Chesley said. “With KVCC’s commitment to growing a quality athletic program, now is the perfect time to join the Lynx athletic department.”
After initially joining the program, Chesley and Mercier discussed Mercier’s expanded responsibilities as Athletic Director and the possibility of Chesley transitioning into the head coaching role.
“I look forward to continuing to build on the foundation Coach Mercier started and to have the opportunity to work together,” Chesley said. “With the college now offering lodging for students, KVCC has the opportunity to draw players from all reaches of the state and beyond.”
For Chesley, the move to KVCC represents an opportunity to take the experience he gained at Lawrence and apply it in a new setting while helping develop the next generation of student-athletes. “I am excited to get this season started, as well as continuing to build for the future,” Chesley said.
Mercier said Chesley’s experience and track record make him a strong addition to the Lynx program. “We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Chesley to the Lynx family,” Mercier said. “He brings with him an extensive coaching resume and a proven record of success. His experience at Lawrence, combined with his passion for developing student-athletes, will be a tremendous asset to our program.”

The Lynx season tips off October 18th with a scrimmage against the University of Maine at Farmington.
