Northwestern State has found its new women’s basketball head coach.
Jordan Dupuy, associate head coach at Southern Mississippi, will be introduced as the sixth head coach of the Lady Demons program at 2 p.m. Tuesday news conference in the Stroud Room inside the NSU fieldhouse. The introductory news conference will be streamed live on www.nsudemons.com.
“The reputation and credibility of the NSU women’s basketball program resulted in a large and quality pool of applicants for the head coach position,” NSU Director of Athletics Greg Burke said. “After a thorough vetting process of the applicants and even more thorough on-campus interview process, the consensus was that Jordan Dupuy would be an excellent fit for our athletic program, university, and community. Most importantly, he will be a quality leader for the young women in our basketball program. I look forward to officially introducing Jordan, and his family, to the NSU fan base at tomorrow’s press conference.”
Dupuy succeeds co-head coaches Brooke and Scott Stoehr, who were named co-head coaches at Louisiana Tech three weeks ago. His hiring is subject to approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, which includes Northwestern State.
Dupuy, a Baton Rouge native, returns to his home state after spending more than a decade with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Southern Miss.
Dupuy spent the past eight seasons on the Southern Miss women’s staff, serving as associate head coach for the final three seasons on coach Joye Lee-McNelis’ staff. In his first five seasons, Dupuy was the first assistant coach to Lee-McNelis.
He helped lead the Golden Eagles to consecutive seasons of at least 25 wins in 2013-14 (27-7) and 2014-15 (25-11). In those seasons, Southern Miss played in the Women’s NIT, reaching the Elite Eight of the 2015 event.
The 27 wins in 2013-14 tied the Southern Miss school record.
Dupuy’s first head coaching job will come at the helm of a Lady Demons program that has reached national postseason tournaments for three consecutive seasons. NSU won back-to-back Southland Conference Tournaments to earn NCAA Tournament berths in 2014 and 2015 and reached the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
He inherits a program with two seniors, including 2015 Southland Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player Beatrice Attura, and eight total returning letterwinners along with a five-player signing class.
In addition to helping the Lady Eagles produce two of the best seasons on the court, Dupuy was instrumental in delivering a pair of recruiting classes that ranked among the best in Conference USA.
The Lady Eagles 2010 class was ranked 42nd nationally and their 2013 class ranked in the top 70 nationally. Dupuy also helped bring two ESPN Top 100 players to Hattiesburg during his tenure.
Dupuy helped develop Southern Miss’ guards throughout his tenure and was responsible for recruiting and coaching 11 All-Conference USA performers, four members of the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, three Conference USA All-Defensive Team selections and two conference Newcomers of the Year.
Dupuy also was instrumental in developing Jamierra Faulkner, the 34th overall selection in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky.
“When he came here, his mission was to become a head coach,” Lee-McNelis said. “We put him in that situation so that he could have his hand in many things so he would be prepared. He has handled every aspect of our program.
“Jordan has been very instrumental in our success here at Southern Miss. We’re going to miss him. We appreciate everything he and his family have done for the University of Southern Mississippi and for Lady Eagle basketball. I have no doubt Jordan Dupuy and his family will be an asset to the Natchitoches community and to Northwestern State University.”
After serving as a manager for the Southern Miss men’s basketball team as an undergraduate, Dupuy began his coaching career as a graduate assistant with the Golden Eagles while completing work on his master’s degree from USM. He also was the director of basketball operation for Southern Miss during the 2003-04 season.
Dupuy helped the Golden Eagles program transition from James Green’s tenure to that of Larry Eustachy.
He then became an assistant boys basketball coach at St. Stanislaus College, a Catholic high school in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Dupuy spent one season at St. Stanislaus before moving to Forrest County (Miss.) High School where he was an assistant boys basketball coach.
He then spent the next two seasons at Oak Grove (Miss.) High School where he was an assistant girls and boys basketball and assistant softball coach.
Dupuy returned to his alma mater as an assistant under Lee-McNelis for the 2008-09 season, helping lead the Lady Eagles to the Conference USA Tournament championship game that season.
With Dupuy as associate head coach, the Lady Eagles continued their climb toward the top of Conference USA, a run that culminated in a combined 52 victories across the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
