South Plains College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Caya Petree has been named as the WHoopDirt.com JUCO Coach of the Year presented by Pivot Analysis for the 2019-20 college basketball season. Petree qualified for the award by being named as the HoopDirt.com/Pivot Analysis Coach of the Week for Week 3 of the season.
Coach Petree led South Plains College to one of the best seasons in program history, claiming multiple awards in the process. The Lady Texans finished the season with a record of 32-1 and most recently captured the Region V title with a 74-64 victory over Collin County on March 7th. Coach Petree’s squad also picked up the WJCAC crown earlier in the season, marking their first outright conference title since 2013.
The Lady Texans began the season 26-0 and spent four weeks atop the NJCAA DI Top-25 poll in January and February. South Plains would have been a No. 2 seed in the National Tournament – their highest ranking in program history.
Coach Petree’s accomplishments did not go unnoticed this season, as she was named the WJCAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season. She also picked up a national honor, winning the United States Marine Corps/WBCA Two-Year College National Coach of the Year award. In her five seasons at the helm of South Plains, Coach Petree has amassed a record of 127-34.
