The UT Permian Basin women’s basketball program has made a strong addition to its coaching staff, as Head Coach Rae Boothe announced the hiring of Jasmyn Johnson. Johnson joins the Falcons after two successful seasons as an assistant coach at Blinn College, where she helped guide the Buccaneers to a 48-18 overall record. During the 2023-24 season, Blinn enjoyed its most successful campaign under her tenure, finishing 24-10 and capturing the Region 14 Championship.
“I chose UTPB as my next stop in my career for personal growth, developing my leadership skills and just wanting to continue to learn,” said Johnson. “Coaching is an ongoing process of learning and development and I’m always looking to improve in every aspect.”
Heading into her third year of collegiate coaching, Johnson is eager to make an immediate impact at UTPB both on and off the court.
“I’m most excited to make an impact on the upcoming season and to be a part of such an amazing community,” said Johnson. “On and off the court, I’m committed to making everyone around me better and take advantage of the God given talent and opportunity that was given to me.”
For Johnson, coaching is about more than competition—it’s about mentorship and growth.
“My favorite thing about being a coach is the impact, relationships, and just a passion for the game. By making an impact, it gives me the opportunity to help young athletes achieve their goals and develop valuable life skills that will help them in their future careers,” said Johnson. “Basketball has been a lifelong passion, and I still enjoy every aspect of it, I love the grind, the good days, bad days, wins, losses and the challenges.”
Before her time at Blinn, Johnson spent a year coaching at her alma mater, West Monroe High School, before enlisting in the United States Air Force and serving a two-year tour in Germany.
In high school, she led West Monroe to four straight playoff appearances, including three semifinal runs. She earned second-team all-district honors, averaging 15 points and six rebounds per game as a senior and was named the 2016 Ouachita Citizen Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Johnson went on to play Division I basketball at Northwestern State University in Louisiana. During her four seasons with the Lady Demons (2016-2020), Johnson played in 104 games with 52 starts and averaged 6.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.7 steals. She excelled as a defender, finishing fourth in steals and steals per game (2.3) in the Southland Conference during the 2019-20 campaign. In addition, during her final season, Johnson became the first player in three seasons to start every game for the Lady Demons in a season, averaging a career-high 26.6 minutes per game, and had career bests in rebounds (113), rebounds per game (3.9), steals (66), points (286) and points per game (9.9).
