Spoo Joins SIUE Staff

Head Coach Paula Buscher announced that Holly Spoo has been named an assistant coach for the SIUE women’s basketball program.

“I am excited to add Coach Spoo to our staff,” said Buscher. “She brings with her a wealth of basketball knowledge and ability to teach the game to our student-athletes.  Her experience and passion will help continue to elevate our program.”

This is the second time Buscher has worked with Spoo. She previously was an assistant under Buscher when both were coaches at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

“The opportunity to rejoin Coach Buscher on the sidelines and get back into the collegiate game is exciting,” said Spoo. “I’m very thankful to be a member of such a great staff and a high-quality athletic department within a thriving University.  It’s great to be in the trenches and helping our student-athletes grow and strive towards their potential, both on and off the court, each day.  The possibilities that lie ahead for Cougar women’s basketball are abundant, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.”

Spoo comes to SIUE after spending five years as the co-owner, director and founder of the Wisconsin Impact, a youth club basketball program for girls in grades 4-12. She was responsible for leading the growth of the program to 170 players on 17 teams as well a coaching staff of more than 20.

She previously was an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee during the 2005-2006 season when the Panthers posted a 22-10 record, the best in program history. That team was the Horizon League conference co-champions, the Horizon League Tournament champion and NCAA Tournament participant. Two players from that team were named first team All-Horizon League, and the head coach garnered Coach of the Year honors.

Spoo spent one season at Wayne State (Neb.) as an assistant coach and five as an assistant at Nebraska Omaha. At both stops, she was involved in all aspects of the program while primarily responsible for coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the recruiting process along with player development while also serving as an instructor.

Inducted into the UW Oshkosh Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011, Spoo was a Kodak All-American in 1998 and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. A four-time All-Conference pick, she was the captain of the 1997 and 1998 teams after helping the 1996 team to a perfect 31-0 national championship run.

Spoo earned a bachelor of science at Wisconsin Oshkosh in biology and secondary education in 1999 and a master’s in exercise science from Nebraska Omaha in 2003.
