Southeastern University women’s basketball coach Tim Hays has resigned to pursue an NCAA Division I coaching opportunity.
Hays has been named to the women’s basketball coaching staff at the University of Colorado under new head coach JR Payne.
“My family was given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of a program in a Power 5 conference while living in our home state and only being 10 minutes from our family,” said Hays.
Hays was hired at Southeastern on March 23rd after a successful tenure as head coach at Colorado Christian University. Hays had also previously coached professionally in Australia, and was an assistant at Division I Montana State.
“We’re disappointed to lose a coach like Tim in such a short time but I wish him the best in Boulder,” said Director of Athletics Drew Watson. “Losing coaches is never easy, but the fact that we’ve lost two in the last year to NCAA I schools says something about the standard we’re trying to set in Fire Athletics. That won’t change moving forward.”
The Fire are coming off of their third straight 20-win season, a second consecutive appearance in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament, and first Sun Conference Regular Season and Tournament championships.
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I had to be a part of the SEU community even if it was short-lived,” said Hays. “This is a very special place and this athletics department is doing incredible things to position itself as the top in the country. I look forward to seeing SEU challenge for national championships in the very near future!”
A national search to fill the vacancy is underway.
