Sam Hoyt named assistant coach for USF Women’s Basketball

Sam Hoyt has been named an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Sioux Falls, according to an announcement on Tuesday (May 30) by USF head women’s basketball coach Travis Traphagen.

Hoyt, a former Academic All-American guard at Michigan Tech, comes to USF after three seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Youngstown State. She also served as an assistant coach at DII Northwood in 2014-15.

“I look forward to working with Sam (Hoyt), who has DI coaching experience and knowledge of the DII level after playing at a high level for Michigan Tech,” said Traphagen, whose USF team has gone 49-14 overall, including 32-12 in the NSIC, over the past two seasons with consecutive appearances in the NSIC Postseason Tournament. “She is an outstanding recruiter with a great sense of humor, and the ability to connect with student-athletes, and families. She brings a lot to the table,” he said.

A 2013 graduate of Michigan Tech, Hoyt was a three-year starter, who scored 1,434 points and led her team to a 103-22 record.  As a starting guard as a sophomore, Hoyt led Michigan Tech to the DII national championship game. She was selected First-Team Academic All-American as a senior and a Division II Honorable Mention All-American each of her last two seasons.

At Youngstown State, she was in charge of the development of the Penguins’ point guards, and assisted on the court in opponent scouting and practice planning. She was the program’s primary recruiter in Michigan, assisted with equipment and compliance needs, and ran the team’s annual golf outing and summer camps.

During two stops at YSU, Hoyt helped the team to a 45-50 record, including a 21-13 mark two years ago when the Penguins advanced to the Women’s Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. This past year, YSU led the Horizon League in three pointers per game for the third straight season and ranked second in free throw percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio.

In Hoyt’s first stop at YSU, the Penguins overachieved to finish third in the Horizon League and advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. They matched their best start ever to a conference season with six straight victories, and they had their best offense in more than a decade. The team’s 70.3 points per game were the highest since 1999-2000, and they had their highest field goal percentage in 12 years.

At Northwood, Hoyt helped coach the Timberwolves to an 18-11 overall record and a 14-8 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Northwood finished fourth in the regular season standings and tied a school record for most wins at the Division II level.

While a student at Michigan Tech, she earned the “Woman of Promise” Award, which recognizes the achieving women at the university with promising futures. She made the Dean’s list six times and received academic excellence awards from the mathematics department. Hoyt earned her Bachelor’s degree in math from Michigan Tech in 2013. She minored in economics with a concentration in secondary education and earned a coaching certificate.
