Northeast Mississippi WBB staff resigns

Brenda Mayes and Kunshinge Sorrell-Howard have tendered their resignations as the coaches of the Northeast Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team.

Mayes and Sorrell-Howard just completed their seventh seasons in charge of the program in which they played for as student-athletes under current Northeast president Dr. Ricky Ford.

“We will always be thankful for the work that Brenda and Kunshinge did with our women’s basketball program,” said Ford. “They will forever be cherished members of the Northeast family.”

Mayes as head coach led the Lady Tigers to the 2018 Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) North Division championship with 18 wins, which was the most in a single season under her watch.

Her teams made five postseason appearances overall with regional semifinal berths in 2017 and 2018. Mayes and Sorrell-Howard are both members of the Northeast and MACCC sports halls of fame.

Mayes and Sorrell-Howard helped 11 players reach the four-year level. They also instructed 10 student-athletes that received all-conference recognition at least once during their careers at Northeast.

“The hard work and leadership shown by coach Mayes and coach Howard with the Lady Tiger basketball program has been greatly appreciated by myself and the entire athletic department,” said Northeast athletic director Kent Farris. “The players and their families were always their greatest concern.”

The search for Northeast’s next leader will begin immediately. The Lady Tigers have won a national championship, three region titles and 10 conference crowns during their tradition-rich history.
