LIU Brooklyn Names Asia Williams Assistant Coach

LIU Brooklyn head women’s basketball coach Stephanie Oliver has rounded out her coaching staff with the hiring of Asia Williams as an assistant coach. Williams was a standout player at Wake Forest for four seasons before entering the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant at Appalachian State in 2013-14.

“Asia brings high level playing experience from her career at Wake Forest, as well as collegiate coaching skills developed at her time at Appalachian State,” Oliver says. “We’re excited to have her as part of the team.”

A native of Durham, N.C., Williams was named the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year in 2009 after an outstanding season at Hillside High School. The 5-11 guard led the Hornets to a runner-up showing at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 4-A State Tournament. Williams tallied 20 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals in the state championship game, and closed the season averaging 21.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.2 steals.

While a member of the Demon Deacons, Williams played in 109 games and made 36 starts in the backcourt. As a senior, she led Wake with 145 assists – the sixth-highest total in Wake Forest single-season history – while also ranking fourth on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per contest. Williams dished out 10 assists against both Duke and Virginia, and scored 20 points while pilfering seven steals and blocking three shots in an ACC Tournament victory over Georgia Tech.

In her two seasons at Appalachian State, Williams was a member of the coaching staff that helped the Mountaineers to a 10-8 record in the Southern Conference before the team moved to the Sun Belt conference in 2014-15. Her first season included a road victory over regular-season champion Western Carolina, and her second year included a shift to a video coordinator role.

Williams graduated with a degree in communications and media studies from Wake Forest in 2013 and earned a master’s in business administration (MBA) from Appalachian State in 2015.
