FORDHAM: Women’s Basketball Shuffles Coaching Staff

The Fordham women’s basketball program announced two promotions within its staff, it was announced Friday by head coach Stephanie Gaitley. Katelyn Linney has been elevated from administrative assistant to assistant coach, while Clare Berenato moves up from the assistant director of basketball operations spot to the administrative assistant position.

Linney, who is entering her third season at Rose Hill, is earning her third promotion in three seasons with the Rams. She started out as the Rams’ assistant director of basketball operations during the team’s Atlantic 10 Championship run and was elevated to the position of administrative assistant prior to the 2014-15 campaign. Before arriving at Rose Hill, Linney enjoyed a standout four-year career as a member of the women’s basketball team at Fairfield. As a team captain, she established herself as one of the premier scorers in school history, setting records for three-pointers made, three-pointers attempted, and three-pointers made per game. Linney finished her career with 1,262 points, good enough for 16th all-time in Stags’ history.  She also ranked 17th in career assists with 235. Linney graduated from Fairfield with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Math and Marketing.  She is currently working towards a Master’s in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Supervision at Fordham.

“We are excited to move Katelyn up to assistant coach,” Gaitley said. “She was able to fill in for Coach Ang (Szumilo) during maternity leave and did a terrific job. Katelyn has great energy and a strong basketball IQ.  Her enthusiasm will be a great asset on the court and in recruiting. She has a bright coaching future ahead of her!”

Berenato, who is entering he second season at Rose Hill, is earning her second promotion in two seasons with the Rams. A 2013 graduate of Seton Hill, she came to Fordham after serving as an assistant coach at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa.  With the Falcons, Berenato worked primarily with post players, while also helping develop practice plans, in-game strategy and scouting reports. Prior to her time at Lackawanna, Berenato was a standout player at Seton Hill, twice serving as a team captain.  As a senior, she led the Griffins to an appearance in the WVIAC championship game, two years after helping her squad reach the Division II NCAA Tournament in 2009-10. She graduated from Seton Hill Summa Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Art in Communications, Entrepreneurial Studies and Sports Management.

“Clare did an outstanding job as our assistant DOBO,” Gaitley said. “We recently promoted Clare to the administrative assistant position.  She has great people skills and is extremely organized. She is an important piece to our coaching puzzle, and I look forward to seeing her continue to grow as a coach.”
