Dan Eberhardt Named Cal Poly Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach

Dan Eberhardt, most recently the head men’s basketball coach at Holy Names University, has been named an assistant coach of the Cal Poly women’s basketball program, the second assistant hired by head coach Shanele Stires.

“Coach Eberhard (“Coach Eb”) is a true team player,” Stires said. “He embodies true selflessness and puts forth extraordinary effort in everything he touches. He is one of the most talented coaches that I have ever met in my career. I knew when Coach Eb wanted to be a part of what we are building at Cal Poly that it was a banner day for our program.”

Eberhardt arrives at Cal Poly after spending the last two years as the head men’s coach at Holy Names University in Oakland.

Prior to that, he was an assistant coach/associate head coach for the Cal State East Bay men’s team from 2014-20. While he was there, the team set a school record for wins twice and received the first ever NCAA Division II regional and national ranking. Eberhardt coordinated recruiting efforts that led to 10 CCAA All-Conference selections, two All-West Region selections and one CCAA Newcomer of the Year. Off the court, Eberhardt helped develop an academic support plan that led to four consecutive Team Academic Excellence Awards.

Before coaching at Cal State East Bay, Eberhardt was an assistant men’s coach at California Maritime Academy from 2012-14. During that time, the Keelhaulers won consecutive CalPac Conference and Tournament Championships, averaging 25 wins per season. The team achieved the highest NAIA ranking in school history and reached the NAIA National Tournament Sweet 16 in 2012-13.

“The limitless energy and great dexterity that he provides shows that he is capable of handling any facet of a program,” Stires added. “This ability is an invaluable resource personally and for our young ladies. He is a tireless recruiter with great energy, and he has many talents that will elevate our program. To say I am excited about Coach Eberhart is an understatement – I am delighted to have him join our team.”

A native of Roseville in the Sacramento area, Eberhardt played at Woodcreek High School before going on to play at Grossmont Community College where in 2009-10, he led the team in points, assists and steals, earning All-Conference honors.

He then went on to play two years at Cal Maritime Academy where he was a team captain and was named All-Conference, served as President for the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, and received the NAIA Dr. LeRoy Walker Champion of Character Award.

Eberhardt earned a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business and Logistics from Cal Maritime and a Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University.
