Midwestern State alumnus Drew Coffman has been hired as the 13th head coach in the history of Midwestern State women’s basketball. Coffman coached the Decatur girls’ basketball team to back-to-back Class 4A state championships in each of the past two seasons.
“I want to thank Dr. Stacia Haynie (MSU President), Kyle Williams (Athletic Director), the hiring committee and everyone who has entrusted me with this great opportunity,” Coffman said. “I am truly excited to return to Midwestern State. I am going to work to return ‘Dome Magic’ back to D.L. Ligon Coliseum.”
Coffman, who scored more than 17 points per game at Midwestern State in the 2006-07 season, has coached boys and girls high school basketball for 20 seasons and has a career record of 476-146 (.765).
Coffman coached the boys’ team at Decatur from 2012 – 2021, winning multiple district championships and reaching the state semifinals in 2019. He took over the girls’ program in 2022.
Coffman also coached boys’ basketball at Hico High School, Kermit High School and Eaton High School.
Williams calls Coffman a proven winner.
“He uses basketball as a vehicle for developing young women into leaders who are prepared to make a meaningful impact beyond the game,” Williams said. “The pursuit to win championships continues to be the goal — coach Coffman exemplifies just that.”
In his career, Coffman’s teams have won 10 district championships, advanced to 17 consecutive playoff appearances, and most recently captured back-to-back state championships.
Coffman takes over a program that finished last season with a 9-17 record and went 6-14 in the Lone Star Conference. Midwestern State has not qualified for the LSC Postseason Tournament since 2022.
“My vision would be to establish a championship-driven culture rooted in player development, regional recruiting strength, and community connection. I am committed to building a program that competes for Lone Star Conference championships, develops confident and resilient young women, and represents Midwestern State University with pride and integrity,” Coffman said.
Coffman’s coaching philosophy centers on daily competitive standards, structured player development, and strong academic accountability.
“At the collegiate level, I understand that success requires more than X’s and O’s,” Coffman said. “It demands intentional recruiting relationships, roster construction, compliance awareness, fundraising collaboration, and meaningful community engagement. Through active relationships with Texas high school and club coaches, I have built a trusted statewide network that strengthens program visibility and long-term sustainability.”
The veteran coach will also rely on the experience he gained while at Midwestern State, where he was both a student athlete and a graduate assistant, gaining invaluable experience in NCAA recruiting, scouting, film breakdown, academic oversight, and program operations.
“That experience shaped my understanding of Lone Star Conference competition and the level of preparation required to win consistently in Division II athletics,” Coffman said.
Coffman will start at Midwestern State immediately.
