CNU Announces Coaching Staff for 2015-16

Christopher Newport University head women’s basketball coach Bill Broderick has announced his coaching staff for the 2015-16 season. Remaining on staff for her second year as assistant coach is Brooke Long, while Rachel Allen has been added to the sideline this season.

“I am happy to have Coach Long at my side for the second consecutive season, and excited to announce Coach Allen’s hiring as well,” Broderick said. “Coach Long is obviously very familiar with the way we do things and the level of excellence that is expected, and Coach Allen is an exciting, young coach with Division I playing experience. Both will make an impact as we continue to excel toward becoming a championship level program.”

Long will serve as the Captains’ assistant coach after one year on the CNU sideline in 2014-15. A former Division I and Division II player, Long started her coaching career with the Keen State College Owls in 2013-14 and joined CNU prior to last season. Her playing career included stints at Longwood University, Armstrong Atlantic State University and Franklin Pierce University. After enduring a pair of ACL injuries in her career, Long helped guide the FPU Ravens to the NCAA Tournament in her final season.

Also joining Broderick on the sideline this year will be Rachel Allen, who completed her college career last season as a member of the Division I Tennessee State University Tigers. The starting point guard all four years of her career, Allen wrapped up her tenure with 866 total points and 439 career assists. She is the program’s all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage, ranks third in career assists and also owns the single season record with 155 in her final season, leading the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament.

With the CNU coaching staff set, the Captains will return to action this week with the first official practice scheduled for Thursday, October 15. The Captains enter their fourth year under coach Bill Broderick, who has compiled an impressive 70-18 overall record for a winning percentage of 79.5%. The Captains have made two NCAA Tournament appearances under Broderick, with a finish in the Elite Eight and one in the Sweet 16.

Overall, the Captains have made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances in program history, including five in the last seven years.
