Oakland University Women’s Basketball has announced the addition of Chamissa “Missa” Anderson as an assistant coach on head coach Keisha Newell‘s staff.
“I’m so happy to welcome Missa to the OU family. Missa brings great energy, a magnetic personality, and a relentless work ethic that will elevate our program,” said Newell. “Her experience across multiple levels, including as a head coach, has shaped her into a strong leader. She will play a key role in our recruiting efforts and bring valuable insight and experience to our on-court development. We’re excited to have her on board.”
Anderson joins Oakland after serving as the Director of Recruiting and Assistant Coach for West Virginia’s women’s basketball program from 2023 to 2025, one of the top programs in the nation and a Big 12 powerhouse.
With Anderson on the staff, The Mountaineers were one of the premier defensive squads in the nation in 2024-25, ranking 15th in scoring defense (55.7 opponent ppg), second in steals per game (13.6 spg), and fourth in turnovers forced per game (23.55).
West Virginia was one of the top programs in the country during her tenure, ranking in the top 25 for the entirety of both seasons, finishing 25-8 in both of the last two seasons, advancing to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament in both seasons as well. She also helped coach 2025 WNBA draftee JJ Quinerly.
Prior to her time with the Mountaineers, she was an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin (SFA) from 2021 to 2023. Her efforts helped the program compile a 55-12 record, a 2022 NCAA Tournament appearance, and 2023 WNIT win.
Before her time at SFA, Anderson spent three seasons as the assistant coach at Missouri Southern State University where she helped guide the Lions to three consecutive MIAA Tournament appearances and coached four all-conference honorees.
Anderson’s coaching resume also includes a successful stint at Kansas City Community College. During her time there, the program achieved back-to-back Top-20 national rankings and won the 2016 NJCAA Division II National Championship with a 33-win season.
A former standout player at Trinity International University, Anderson was a two-year starter for the Lady Trojans, averaging a double-double for her career. She finished her collegiate career top 25 in total rebounds in NAIA Division II during the 2010-11 season. Anderson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports and Wellness Management.
Her playing career also included stops at Siena Heights University and Ellsworth Community College, where she set a single-game rebounding record and ranks among the top five rebounders for a single season in school history.
With over a decade of coaching experience at every level, Anderson brings a culture of success to the Golden Grizzlies.
