Detroit Mercy women’s basketball Graduate Assistant Coach Latifa Amzil ’25 has been promoted to Graduate Assistant Coach/Director of Basketball Operations, while Darius Cunningham III joins the staff as a Graduate Assistant for Digital Media announced Head Coach Kiefer Haffey.

“I’m incredibly proud to give a big Titan congratulations to one of our own, Latifa, on her promotion to Director of Basketball Operations. Latifa is a bright light in our program and will impact this world far beyond basketball,” said Haffey. “Her positive spirit, willingness to take on any task, maturity, discipline, and organization are all traits that we know will enable Tifa to thrive in this promoted role. We’re excited to have her here, and our operations are in good hands.”

“Our Graduate Assistant for Digital Media has had some very talented young people occupying the title since it was created. Those who have gone on to become full-time content creators in Division I athletics and women’s basketball,” added Haffey. We believe we have the next great occupier of this role in Darius Cunningham III. From the onset of interviews, he was prompt, ambitious to win the role, and showcased a willingness to help the program in any way possible. Darius is going to be a tremendous asset to our staff over the next two years, and those who follow our socials or pay attention to our brand are in for a treat.”

After playing two seasons for the Titans, Amzil transitioned from student-athlete to Graduate Assistant Coach before the 2025-26 season after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Service Administration in May 2025. She will take on an increased role managing the day-to-day operational logistics for the team heading into the 2026-27 season.

Cunningham III comes to Detroit Mercy from Michigan State, where he served as a social media intern, manager, and practice player for the women’s basketball team. He also did freelance work producing branded content edits for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards and collaborated with the digital media brand, Flighthouse, which has 28M followers on TikTok.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Creative Advertising from Michigan State University in 2025.
