NAIA NEWS: Schuknecht Named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Midland

Midland University has announced that Cam Schuknecht has been named the new head coach of the Midland women’s basketball program.

Schuknecht brings more than 25 years of collegiate coaching experience to the role, including the past nine seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Midland (2017-present). During his tenure with the Warriors, he helped guide the program to a 2024-25 GPAC Postseason Tournament appearance — the team’s first since 2016-17 — and was part of 16-win seasons in both 2017-18 and 2021-22. He has coached one NAIA All-American, one CoSIDA Academic All-American, and 19 All-GPAC performers at Midland.

“Cam has been an integral part of our basketball culture at Midland for nearly a decade,” said Courtney Thomsen, Midland Director of Athletics. “His leadership, player development expertise, and commitment to excellence make him the ideal person to lead our women’s basketball program forward.”

Prior to coming to Fremont, Schuknecht served as head men’s basketball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University from 2006-14, where he compiled a 33-20 (.623) record against NCAA Division III opponents and guided the program to two GPAC Postseason Tournament appearances during its NAIA-eligible seasons. His 2013-14 team posted the program’s highest win total and best conference finish since 2000-01, and that same squad ranked among the NAIA national leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.76), turnover margin (4.1), and field goal percentage (49.6%).

Schuknecht also served as an assistant coach at Luther College (2014-17), University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2003-04), Wartburg College (2002-03) and University of Saint Mary (1999-2002), in addition to one season as head coach at Saint Mary in 2001-02, where he posted a 16-11 record and received votes in the NAIA national poll for eight consecutive weeks.

Throughout his career, Schuknecht has coached multiple NAIA All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, and conference honorees. He has also demonstrated a strong commitment to academics and community engagement, teaching in human performance and health-related fields at Midland and previous institutions. He holds a Master of Science in Education from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Arts from Wartburg College.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Schuknecht is a longtime member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, a USA Basketball Youth Development Gold Licensed Coach, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

“First off, I would like to thank Dr. Aly Williams and Courtney Thomsen for this opportunity,” said Coach Schuknecht. “The women’s basketball program at Midland University has a rich tradition and a strong alumni base. I’m excited to develop relationships with our alumni. We compete in a tremendously successful league. Our goal is to build a program that consistently competes at the highest level, in the GPAC and nationally. At the same time, we want to develop players to be the best version of themselves in all that they do.”

Schuknecht will begin his duties immediately as he prepares the Warriors for the 2026-27 season.
