Northern Colorado’s Mattio receives 3-yr contract extension

The University of Northern Colorado Board of Trustees has approved a 3-year extension for head coach Kristen Mattio‘s employment agreement. This extension keeps Mattio under contract through the 2028-29 season.

“We are really proud of how Coach Mattio has continued to develop our women’s basketball program since she arrived at UNC,” UNC Director of Athletics Darren Dunn said. “Our team is excelling academically, involved in our community so we are excited with the direction of the women’s basketball program.”

The extension keeps Mattio, who is in her fourth season with the Bears, through the 2028-2029 campaign.

“Being the head coach at the University of Northern Colorado has been both a tremendous honor and an enormous responsibility,” Mattio said. “I am full of gratitude to Darren Dunn and Senior Associate AD/SWA Rachel Walton and all the administration, my entire coaching staff, our donors and everyone in our Bear community that have been awesome to work with on this journey and the belief that has been instilled in me to lead this program. I also want to thank the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to continue to represent this great University!”

In her four seasons at the helm, Mattio has provided consistent improvement on and off the court each year. She owns a 204-87 record in 10 years as a head coach, including 50-52 at Northern Colorado. Last year, Mattio guided UNC to its first postseason appearance since 2019.

“We have made significant progress with Big Sky and postseason play the past few years,” Mattio said. “Our fanbase has stepped up at the Bank of Colorado Arena and their passion for success fuels our team. We are focused on continuing to recruit the best of the best and we feel we have a solid foundation built in the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. And with all of that in place, I am eager and excited for the continued success of our program.”

This season the Bears are off to one of their best starts during the NCAA Division I era. They enter Friday’s contest against Denver with a 7-2 mark, the second-best record in the Big Sky. UNC won its last six contests including wins over Big 12 opponent BYU and Utah State of the Mountain West.

“UNC and our entire Greeley community will continue to get our best as we remain steadfast and focused on Big Sky Championships and postseason play,” Mattio said.
