Saint Joseph’s College of Maine is proud to announce the promotion of Chris Woodside to Associate Head Coach of the Women’s Basketball team. Woodside, who has served as an Assistant Coach with the Monks since 2020, will take on an expanded role under the leadership of longtime Head Coach Mike McDevitt.
Coach Woodside brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having cultivated a diverse background in sports leadership and coaching over the past decade. His journey began at just 18 years old, coaching recreation, travel, and AAU basketball during his college years. After earning a Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut, he quickly established himself in high school coaching, leading the Calais Varsity Boys to a conference championship and a Class C State Championship in just two seasons.
Woodside’s success at Calais led him to Schreiner University, where he helped guide the Men’s Basketball team to its first-ever Conference Championship, while also serving as a Leadership Coach for multiple teams. Returning to Maine in 2017, he took the reins as the Girls Varsity Basketball Head Coach at John Bapst High School, where his teams consistently made tournament appearances.
In 2020, while completing his Educational Doctorate Degree in Sports Leadership, Woodside joined Saint Joseph’s College as an Assistant Coach for the Women’s Basketball team. He also became a professor of Sports Management and Co-Facilitator of the Monk Leadership Academy, where he continues to impart valuable leadership and athletic skills.
Since arriving at Saint Joseph’s for the 2020 campaign, Coach Woodside has helped the Monks post a 71-20 overall record while securing two Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship titles.
Reflecting on his promotion, Coach Woodside said, “I am incredibly honored that Coach McDevitt has chosen to elevate me into this role. Being an Associate Head Coach is a major career accomplishment and, for me, made even bigger that a Hall of Fame coach like Coach McDevitt felt I deserved it. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him, our other assistants, and our amazing student-athletes the last four years. Saint Joseph’s Monks women’s basketball has an expectation of excellence which I am proud that I get to continue to be a part of.”
Woodside added, “Ten years ago I had my first season as a head varsity basketball coach at Calais High School. Reflecting on my journey, I am humbled that so many different administrators, coaches, athletes, and parents have entrusted me to help student-athletes grow both on the court and off the court. I plan to honor that trust by continuing to grow as a coach and finding new ways to serve my athletes moving forward.”
Head Coach Mike McDevitt, who is entering his 33rd season for the Monks, expressed his confidence in Woodside’s promotion, stating, “I am very excited to promote Chris to Associate Head Coach. He has a relentless work ethic, tremendous knowledge of the game, and provides our team with outstanding leadership and culture-building skills.”
As Associate Head Coach, Woodside will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Saint Joseph’s College Women’s Basketball, continuing the program’s legacy of excellence while contributing his own expertise and passion to the team’s success.
