Rafael Matos becomes the Head Coach for the Sussex County Community College Women’s Basketball Program during the 2023-24 season.
Matos brings a wealth of basketball experience to the coaching staff after a successful collegiate playing career and high school and college coaching stint. Born in the Bronx, Matos moved to the Poconos in Pennsylvania while in middle school and went on to a have successful high school career at East Stroudsburg North High School. While a member of the team, Matos led the team in free throw and three-point percentage during his junior and senior year.
After graduating high school in 2006, Matos attended and played basketball for Sussex County Community College for Cornell Thomas. Matos averaged 14.2 points per game while at Sussex, placing him top 10 in the region in scoring.
Matos began his coaching career after graduation at his old high school, East Stroudsburg North High School, where he was the Junior Varsity Boys Basketball coach and worked for the school district as a Teacher’s Aide. Matos then became a NCAA Division 2 assistant basketball coach for 8 years. 3 at Mercy University and 5 years as an assistant for Alliance University formerly known as Nyack College.
Matos also has experience working basketball camps like Hoop Group and Pocono Invitational. Matos currently lives in Newton NJ, and works as an Adjunct Professor for the college and is also sub teacher for the Newton School District.
2013 – 2015 Head JV Boys basketball Coach at East Stroudsburg North High School.
2015 – 2018 Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Mercy University.
2018 – 2023 Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Alliance University.
