Hersch elevated to Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Hamline

Hamline University has announced the hiring as Joshua Hersch as its next head women’s basketball coach. Hersch will assume head coaching duties in his sixth season with the Hamline women’s basketball program, as he’s been the assistant coach since 2018-19. He takes over for Alex Focke, who was named Hamline Assistant Vice President / Athletic Director.

“I am extremely excited and grateful,” Hersch said. “It is a tremendous honor to be named the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Hamline University, and I want to thank President Miller and Athletic Director Alex Focke for this opportunity. Hamline has been a special place to work and grow over the past five years and I look forward to continuing to develop in this new role. I’m also excited for Alex to get his well-deserved opportunity to lead the Hamline Athletic Department, we’ve had an incredible five seasons together and he is ready for his new role.”

The Pipers have accumulated a 67-43 overall record with Hersch on staff, which includes a 37-16 mark over the last two seasons. Hersch helped mold seven MIAC All-Conference selections, one D3Hoops.com All-Region honoree, one MIAC Defensive Player of the Year, two MIAC All-First Team accolades, and one MIAC All-Playoff Team member over his five seasons at the helm. He will look to continue the momentum he helped build over the past two seasons, which included a program-record 19 victories in 2021-22, and their highest MIAC Tournament seed ever at No. 3 in 2022-23.

Hersch arrived to Hamline after assistant women’s basketball coaching stops at Augsburg and St. Thomas (Minn.). He got his coaching career started in 2007, when he was named the head JV and assistant girl’s varsity basketball coach at Cretin Derham Hall in St. Paul.

He currently serves as Director/Coach of the Minnesota Stars AAU Basketball Club, an organization he’s been involved with since 2011.

Hersch, a native of Hawley, Minnesota, obtained his bachelor of science degree in physical education from Augsburg in 2009.

“Our staff has worked hard to create a strong culture and great work ethic within our program,” said Hersch. “I’m proud of what we have accomplished both academically and athletically, and am committed to continue building on our recent successes with our current and future student-athletes.”
