After eight seasons leading her alma mater as head coach, Jalie Mitchell has announced her departure from the UNT women’s basketball program.
“I want to express my appreciation to Coach Mitchell for her many contributions to UNT during her playing and coaching career,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley said. “Her legacy here will forever be remembered as she made a big impact on UNT women’s basketball. We wish her the best and look forward to seeing her impact as a coach continue to grow in the next chapter of her career.”
One of the all-time great players in UNT history, Mitchell compiled a 111-127 record in eight seasons including a 58-77 mark in conference play. Mitchell led UNT to a pair of postseason appearances with a 2019 Women’s Basketball Invitational runner-up finish and a 2022 berth in the WNIT.
“This has been a difficult decision, but I am thankful for the last eight years to lead my alma mater,” Mitchell said. “I am proud of all that we accomplished and confident that a strong foundation has been laid. I am so grateful to every young woman and staff member who came together and sacrificed to grow this program. I look forward to continuing to support and root for this program moving forward. Forever Mean Green.”
Mitchell played at North Texas from 1998-2002 and was a four-time all-conference selection. She was the 2002 Sun Belt Player of the Year after averaging 19.4 points per game. A native of Duncanville, Mitchell is the program’s all-time leading scorer, her number 44 is retired, and she was inducted into the UNT Hall of Fame in 2007.
A national search for her replacement will begin immediately.
