Winston-Salem State University women’s basketball head coach L’Tona Lamonte completed her coaching staff with the addition of Andrew Mitchell Jr. as the women’s basketball assistant coach.
“I am extremely excited to have someone with Coach Mitchell’s statue here at Winston-Salem State University,” said head coach L’Tona Lamonte. “The one thing we have been missing is having someone with CIAA head coaching experience. He has over 20 years of CIAA experience and a championship mindset that is going to take us a long way.”
Mitchell, Jr. spent the 21-22 season as the assistant coach for the Women’s 2A State Champions, Salisbury High in Salisbury, North Carolina and helped lead them to a 28-1 record. Overall, after three seasons he finished with a 72-4 record.
Prior to Salisbury High, Mitchell, Jr. coached men’s varsity basketball at North Rowan High School for seven seasons (2010-2017). With the Cavaliers the team won seven straight Central Carolinas Conference (CCC) championships and he was named Coach of the Year four years in a row (2012-2015).
In 2008-2009, Andrew Mitchell, Jr. led the Salisbury Lady Hornets to two consecutive 2A State Championships.
Before coaching at the high schools, he coached at Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe Livingstone from 1994-2007. His team made school history by winning the first CIAA first championship and qualifying for the NCAA playoffs in 2000.
Andrew Mitchell, Jr. has also had stints as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Livingstone College, Fort Valley State University, Johnson C. Smith University, and women’s assistant head coach at Kentucky State University.
He is the Founder/Director of the Bobby Jackson/ Livingstone College Basketball Camp. He is also a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
A four-year student-athlete, Andrew Mitchell, Jr. graduated in 1988 from Catawba College with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education.
He is married to Winston-Salem State alumnae cheerleader, Sandra and they have four children, two boys Marcus and Kendal and two girls, Alexis and Crystal. They also have three grandchildren, Christian, Marley and Allayah.
