Betsy Witman Announces 2022-23 York College Women’s Basketball Staff

York College women’s basketball coach Betsy Witman is happy to announce her 2022-23 Spartan coaching staff.

Witman enters her 26th year at the helm of the program as the Spartans’ all-time win leader at 402 wins. Her staff will have a new look this year as James Kunkle and Katie McGowan join long-time assistant Brooke Davis on the Spartan bench.

Davis begins her seventh year on the staff. She was a standout player for Witman early on in Witman’s tenure. Davis was an All-Capital Athletic Conference selection during her playing days and she still holds the single-game program record for blocked shots with 11. Davis aids Witman in all aspects of the program.

Kunkle comes to York College after a highly successful run as the West York Area High School girl’s coach. Kunkle led the Bulldogs to a PIAA State Tournament Elite Eight berth as West York posted 18 wins in 2021-22. The Bulldogs finished seventh in District III 5A as they advanced to the tournament quarterfinals.

Kunkle was the Bulldogs head coach for the last five years as he accumulated 69 wins during his time on the West York bench. The Bulldogs best year under Kunkle came in 2019-20 as the squad went 21-7 with a YAIAA Division II Championship. West York earned a berth in the PIAA District III 5A semifinals and advanced to the PIAA State Tournament. Kunkle was named the YAIAA Division II Coach of the Year.
Kunkle has also served as the head girl’s coach at New Oxford in addition to coaching stints with the Central PA Elite AAU program.

McGowan returns to her alma mater after a banner Spartan career. She will serve as a volunteer assistant coach. McGowan graduated in 2019 after a stellar four-year career. She played in 102 games as a Spartan as she accumulated 1,076 points, 516 rebounds, 139 assists, 148 steals and 48 blocked shots. Her Spartan teams recorded 67 wins during her career. She became the 16th member of the 1,000 career point club on February 6, 2019 joining her brother Chad as the only brother/sister combo to notch 1,000 career points in a Spartan uniform.

The Spartans are scheduled to kick off their 2022-23 campaign on Tuesday, November 8 in Baltimore when they travel to face Johns Hopkins University. The Spartans then make their home debut on November 12 with the opening round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Wolf Gymnasium.
