The City College of New York Interim Director of Athletics Steve Macias has named Tian Tang interim head coach of the CCNY women’s basketball program for the upcoming 2021-22 season.
“I would like to welcome Coach Tang to the CCNY family,” said Macias. “We’re looking forward to an exciting women’s basketball season.”
Tang spent the past season on the sidelines at Ethical Culture Fieldston School. He served as the Associate Head Coach for the Boys Varsity Basketball program, assisting with skill development, social media presence, scouting, and assisting student-athletes in their college recruitment process.
“I am grateful for the opportunity given by Steve Macias and the rest of the CCNY community,” said Tang. “I am extremely excited to lead the women’s basketball program at CCNY going forward. I am well aware of the challenges ahead, and I will work hard to rebuild the program and bring CCNY back to where it should be in the CUNYAC conference.”
Tang spent one season as a graduate assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas College before his stint at Ethical Culture Fieldston. With the Spartans, he supported the coaching staff in all aspects of running the nationally ranked NCAA II men’s basketball program. His responsibilities include coordinating daily operations and logistics, assisting staff with film editing, analytics and preparation, generating social media content, and community outreach. The team finished the 2019-20 campaign with a 25-7 record, winning the ECC Conference Championship. Additionally, Tang assisted in the development of four ECC All-Conference honorees.
Before STAC, Tang served as an assistant coach for the Sarah Lawrence College men’s basketball program. With the Gryphons, he assisted in all aspects of the program that included recruiting, practice and game preparation, scouting, and camps. Coaching under head coach Chris Ehmer, the team finished the 2018-19 season with a 14-12 record, achieving their best record in program history, en-route to their first appearance in the Skyline Conference Tournament. In all, the Gryphons produced two Skyline All-Conference student-athletes.
Before his time with Sarah Lawrence, Tang spent one season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Western Connecticut State University for the 2017-18 season. He assisted in all program phases, including in-game coaching, team travel logistics, and practice charting. He helped lead the Colonials to an 11-15 record, advancing to the First-Round of the Little East Conference Tournament.
In 2016-17, Tang served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the College of Mount Saint Vincent. His role included preparing scouting reports, coordinating game film exchanges, and supervising on-court and strength and conditioning workouts.
Tang has also had coaching stops at Pro Skills Basketball (2021-Present), Palisades Preparatory School (2015-16), and Our Lady of Sorrows School (2016-19).
Tang played collegiately for three seasons in college, beginning his career at NYU-Poly (2012-13), before transferring to Manhattanville College for his final two seasons (2013-15).
Tang earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, with a minor in Sports Studies and Film Studies, from Manhattanville College in 2016. He would go on to earn his Master’s Degree in Sports Business Management (2017) and Marketing Communication Management (2020) from Manhattanville.
