Daytona State College has announced that college coaching veteran Tron Griffin will serve as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach.
Griffin arrived at Daytona State after serving 2020-21 as the Athletic Director at Atlantic High School in nearby Port Orange. Prior to his time at Atlantic High, Griffin spent time as an Assistant Coach at Stetson University. While with the Hatters, Griffin was responsible for defense, scouting, game preparation, the development of post players, and academic support while assisting with recruiting. The Hatters competed in the WNIT in 2019 after a 2nd place finish in the A-SUN Conference. Griffin helped coach Megan Vincent, Stetson All-time leader in Blocks, A-SUN Newcomer of the Year Day’Neshia Banks (2019), First-Team All A-SUN Player McKenna Beach (2019), Three A-SUN All-Freshman Team players, Mackenzie Davis (2019), Bianca Fizouaty (2019), and Kimia Carter (2020).
Prior to Stetson, Griffin served 2017-18 season as an assistant coach at Georgia State. While with the Panthers, Griffin was responsible for scouting, game preparation, the development of post players, and academic support while assisting with recruiting.
In 2016-17, Griffin lead as head coach at Truett McConnell University, an NAIA program in Cleveland, Ga. During this season, Griffin led the Lady Bears to a 15-16 mark, setting new program records for most overall victories (15), most conference victories (11), and longest home winning streak (6). The team also posted its highest-ever conference finish in program history. Under Griffin’s leadership at TMU, Ariana Sanders was named First-Team All-Appalachian Athletic Conference and Janae’ Simpson and Quinlan Hughes were named to the AAC All-Freshman Team. Anna Murr ranked fifth in NAIA D-II in 3-point field goals made (107) and earned the AAC Champions of Character Award. The Lady Bears also ranked 11th in the NAIA (DII) in field goal percentage defense (.360).
Griffin made the move to TMU after serving four years as an assistant coach and later associate head coach at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. While there, Griffin helped lead the Lady Panthers to two SWAC tournament championships and two NCAA Tournament berths (2013, 2014), where they took on the top national seed in Baylor and UConn. During Griffin’s tenure, Prairie View posted wins over Memphis, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston State, Nicholls State, and Lamar University and compiled a 7-2 record in SWAC Tournament play. Griffin helped coach two SWAC Players of the Year in Latia Williams (2013) and Jeanette Jackson (2015). Jackson was also named SWAC Championship MVP in 2014 and led the league in scoring and assists. Jackson went on to play professionally with several teams in Europe. Griffin also coached Kiara Etienne, who earned SWAC Championship MVP honors in 2013, Shamiya Brooks, who led the SWAC with 11 double-doubles and 4.0 offensive rebounds per game in 2014-15, and Larissa Scott, who ranked fourth in the NCAA in offensive rebounding (5.0) in 2015-16.
Prior to his stint at Prairie View A&M, Griffin served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman University and two seasons as an assistant coach at Florida State College at Jacksonville where he was responsible for post player development, on-floor coaching, scouting, and recruiting.
As a collegiate athlete, Griffin competed for the Bethune-Cookman football team from 2002-06, helping lead the Wildcats to a MEAC Championship in 2002 and the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs in 2002 and 2003. He was also a member of the men’s basketball team during the 2003-04 season. Griffin completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Educational Studies with a concentration on Business Education in 2006 at Bethune-Cookman University and a Master of Science degree in Management and Leadership at Western Governors University in 2021.
A native of Jacksonville, FL Griffin and his wife, Sheena, have three children, Kimora, Kaidyn, and Karson.
