Guilford announces departure of WBB Head Coach Flamini after 18 years of service

The Guilford College Athletics’ department announced the upcoming departure of Stephanie Flamini, the current Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Senior Women Administrator and Assistant Director of Athletics.

This would have been Flamini’s 19th season with the Quakers, having moved to the South to take over the program during the 2003-04 season. She took on Assistant Director duties in 2015.

“Stephanie has been an incredibly successful coach here at the college and will be sorely missed.” said Interim President Jim Hood ’79, Ph.D. “Having served on the Policy Committee with Stephanie while I was Clerk of the Faculty, I know her keen attention to detail and her dedication to excellence. These are the very capacities that make for a winning coach.”

Flamini has amassed a 287-171 record during her time at Guilford, 342-212 overall. During her final season behind the bench, 2019-20, the squad went 17-10 and bowed out to a strong Randolph-Macon team in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference title game. She has been named ODAC Coach of the Year twice (2019 & 2016), 2016 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 5 Coach of the Year, and was a finalist for the 2016 WBCA National Coach of the Year.

Under the King of Prussia, Pa. native’s direction, the Quakers have been to six ODAC Championship title games, claiming three, while making four NCAA Division III National Tournaments. GC has seen 29 All-ODAC honorees, two ODAC Rookie of the Year and countless academic awards during her tenure.

“Academically we have had so many outstanding student-athletes.  Spring 2020 we had a record five players with 4.0 GPA’s and nine players with over a 3.6GPA.  Spring 2021 we had 13 of 14 players with a 3.0 or better.” said Flamini. “I am most proud of what we have been able to accomplish in the classroom and am proud of the strong talented women our program has produced and continues to produce.”

“Stephanie Flamini has been a tremendous contributor to Guilford Athletics as both a coach and an administrator over the last 18 years. She has led the Women’s Basketball team with distinction, winning multiple championships in the highly competitive ODAC.” said Athletics Director Bill Foti. “She has also provided critical leadership to the Athletic Department through her role as Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator. I’m very grateful for her friendship and the council she’s provided me in our working relationship. Her impact on Guilford Athletics will be felt for years to come.”

Outside of her coaching duties, Flamini has taught a first-year experience class and been a member of the school’s Leadership Cooperative Committee. Outside of Guilford, she has been very active in the ODAC and with the WBCA.

“I learned a lot from Stephanie and am glad she has been added to Guilford’s history books as one of the greatest coaches the college has experienced.” said Barbara Lawrence, J.D. M.P.A. Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Title IX Coordinator. “She will be missed and her leaving is a big loss for Guilford and a huge gain for the University of Hartford. I join the many students, staff and faculty in thanking Stephanie for her commitment to excellence.”

Guilford College and its athletics department would like to thank Stephanie for her dedication to the school and its student-athletes and wish her luck as she moves on to the University of Hartford in Hartford, Conn.

“It has been a great honor to serve Guilford College and our student-athletes for 18 years.” said Coach Flamini. “I will always treasure my time here especially my time with our women’s basketball team, it has been a rewarding road. I wish the college and our women’s basketball team all the best moving forward!
