CAU Athletics today announced that Tony Bailey, the assistant coach for the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) Lady Panthers women’s basketball team for the past two seasons, has been named the program’s head coach,.
Bailey, a native of Villa Rica, Ga., was the assistant to Yolanda Moore during a period where the two led the Lady Panthers to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and an NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament appearance.
Moore’s departure attracted 70-plus resumes for the head coaching position from some of the best and brightest, established and upcoming coaches in America, from all three NCAA divisions, Dawson said.
Before coming to Clark Atlanta, Bailey spent three seasons as an assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of West Georgia.
“During the last two years, I had the opportunity to work with and observe Coach Bailey in a variety of situations,” Dawson said. “He is conscientious, consistent, passionate, dedicated. I find in him the leadership attributes and behaviors that aligns with three Athletics priorities: 1) winning championships; 2) graduating student-athletes; and 3) developing leaders.
“I look forward to seeing Coach Bailey develop the Lady Panthers women’s basketball program into a highly-ranked, nationally-competitive program,” he said.
An NJCAA All-American and All-Region player for East Central Community College (Miss.) from 1991-92, Bailey went on to play for the Division I Murray State Racers of the Ohio Valley Conference and then the University of West Georgia. At West Georgia, Bailey was the nation’s third-leading Division II scorer, averaging 25.9 points per game and helping West Georgia to a conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1994.
“I’m incredibly humbled by this opportunity to become the new head coach of Clark Atlanta University women’s basketball,” said Bailey. “I want to express my sincerest appreciation to Interim President Lucille Maugé and athletic director J. Lin Dawson for choosing me. I am eager to get started and continue building the women’s basketball program into a national contender, while empowering these young women to have success on and off the court.”
Bailey earned his bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and Psychology from the University of West Georgia in 2012. He completed his master’s degree in Sports Management with a concentration in Athletic Administration in 2015 from Southern New Hampshire University.
