Vogel named Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Texas A&M International

Texas A&M International University Director of Athletics Griz Zimmermann announced the hiring of Nate Vogel as the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach on Tuesday. Vogel brings with him over a decade of coaching experience and success.

“We are incredibly excited to have Nate join the Dustdevil family,” Zimmermann said. “His track record of recruiting both nationally and internationally are impressive. The job he did in rebuilding the program at Miles Community College is phenomenal, and we look forward to him bringing that same drive and passion for success here to TAMIU, especially as we move into the Lone Star Conference next season.”

Vogel comes to Laredo after two successful seasons as the head coach at Miles Community College in Miles City, Mont. After taking over a program with no returning players and only six weeks to build an entire team, Vogel led the Pioneers to a 25-8 record and an appearance in the NJCAA Region IX Tournament Final Four in his first season. In addition to his team’s success on the court, they were also successful in the classroom with a 3.57 team grade point average, which was good for fourth best in the NJCAA.

“I am honored and so excited to be named the next head women’s basketball coach at Texas A&M International University,” commented Vogel. “I want to thank President Arenaz, Mr. Zimmerman and the rest of the Search Committee for the opportunity to join the TAMIU family. I can’t wait to immerse myself in the community and have a positive impact, not only on the women’s basketball program, but TAMIU as a whole, along with the entire Laredo community. I will attack this job with every ounce of energy I have. I’m so passionate about basketball and this opportunity at TAMIU. This school and community are getting a coach who is crazy excited about this job and will not take it for granted.”

The Pioneers started this season winning the early season Conference Tip-Off Tournament and finished the season winning the Regular Season Mon-Dak Conference Championship. Vogel’s team is currently sitting on an astonishing 33-0 record. In addition to winning the NJCAA Region XIII Championship and the District D Championship, Vogel was named the Region XIII Coach of the Year and the Mon-Dak Conference Coach of the Year.  Vogel also coached one NJCAA All-American, two NJCAA All-Region players, the Region XIII Tournament Co-MVP, the Mon-Dak Conference MVP, another 1st Team All-Conference player and one 2nd Team All-Conference player.

Once again, his team was as successful in the classroom as they were on the court, boasting a 3.72 team GPA after the Fall semester, placing them near the top nationally. In his time at Miles, Vogel has coached five Academic All-Americans and eight Academic All-Conference players.

In addition to Vogel’s work with his team on the court and in classroom, he and his team are heavily involved in the community, logging over 281 hours of community service.

Vogel has also been named the head coach of Team USA’s U19 women’s basketball team at the United World Games this June in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Before arriving at Miles Community College, Vogel spent one season as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Black Hills State University (BHSU) in Spearfish, S.D. At BHSU, he was responsible for designing and implementing all game strategies and systems, recruiting and talent evaluation, practice organization, monitoring student-athlete conditioning and academic progress, and organizing travel accommodations and budget.

Prior to his stint at BHSU, Vogel served in multiple roles at Maryville University in St. Louis, Mo. over a two-year span. In his role as women’s basketball assistant and recruiting coordinator, he was responsible for designing and implementing all game strategies and systems, recruiting and talent evaluation, practice organization, and monitoring student-athlete conditioning and academic progress.

As the head strength and conditioning coach for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs, he helped coach both teams to appearances in the Elite 8 of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament and coached multiple all-conference players. He also spent a season as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program.

Vogel began his head coaching career at the high school level as he spent two years at the helm of the Lutheran High School of St. Charles County boy’s basketball program in St. Peters, Mo.

Vogel got his start in coaching as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Ill. While at SIU he helped coach the men’s basketball program to back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference Championships and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament.

As a player, Vogel was a four-year letter winner, three-year starter and team captain at BHSU. At BHSU, he led his team to a No. 2 ranking in the 1998-1999 season as well as an appearance in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division II Tournament. He also led his team to a Sweet 16 appearance his senior season in 2001-2002.

Vogel earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from BHSU in 2002. He is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from SIU.

Vogel is married to his wife Tracie of 15 years, and they have two children, daughter Cora (3) and son Camden (1).
