University of the Incarnate Word Director of Athletics Dr. Brian Wickstrom announced Sunday that UIW women’s basketball Head Coach Christy Smith’s contract will not be renewed following the 2018-19 season.
“I want to thank Coach Smith for her service to UIW women’s basketball, the athletics department, UIW, and our students,” said Wickstrom. “She has helped to develop some fine student-athletes during her time here, and we wish her well in her future endeavors.”
A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately. UIW’s athletics department has announced a five-person search committee for the task.

Angela Lawson (head of committee) – Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Academic Affairs/SWA
Sr. Walter Maher, CCVI – Vice President for Mission and Ministry
Danielle Shedd – Manager of External Relations
Elizabeth Gerdin – Head synchronized swimming coach
Chelsea Butler – Assistant softball coach
“This is an important hire, and to have the search led by Angela Lawson, the winningest women’s basketball coach in UIW history, will be key in laying the groundwork for this new era,” said Wickstrom. “We also wanted to have Sr. Walter on the committee, as she is a huge supporter of UIW athletics. We are honored to have her join this search.”\
