The Northern Michigan University Women’s Basketball program has announced that Casey Thousand received the new title of Associate Head Coach.
“I would like to thank Coach Mattson along with our Director of Athletics Forrest Karr and Associate Athletic Director Bridget Kyle for this opportunity,” Thousand said. “I am honored to be a part of this excellent program and I am truly humbled. I am thrilled to continue to work with our student-athletes and staff! I am excited to see what the future will bring for this program.”
In her two seasons with NMU, Thousand has helped the Wildcats post a 32-26 overal record, and a 23-18 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Northern Michigan has gone 17-7 at the Berry Events Center and reached the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament both seasons.
Prior to arriving at Northern Michigan, Thousand was the head coach at Division III Edgewood College. The longest-tenured head coach in Eagle history, Edgewood went 74-57 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action. Fifteen Eagles earned all-NACC accolades, and the team made four NACC tournament appearances during her seven years at the helm. Before taking over at Edgewood, Thousand spent three years as an assistant coach at Division III Carthage College.
“Casey has been an invaluable addition to our NMU Women’s Basketball program over the past two years,” said Head Coach Troy Mattson. “She has a great understanding of coaching, is extremely knowledgeable about basketball and has the desire, determination and dedication to make our program better. These are just a few of the qualities she exemplifies and is why we are promoting her to this position.”
The Wildcats made their seventh-straight GLIAC Tournament appearance last season. With the return of players lost to injuries in 2017-18, plus a talented incoming class, the 2018-19 team will look to compete for a GLIAC title.
