College of Idaho athletic director Reagan Rossi has announced the hiring of Janis Beal as the new head women’s basketball coach for the Lady Yotes.
“I am very excited to add Janis Beal to the Coyote Family as our new women’s basketball coach,” Rossi said. “She brings nine years of head coaching experience and has had proven success of recruiting student-athletes who thrive both on the court and in the classroom – which patterns what we strive for at The College of Idaho.”
Beal joins the C of I staff after nine successful seasons at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., including a 25-win season in 2017-18 and three trips to the NJCAA Region IX semifinals (2013, 2015, 2018).
“I am so excited to become part of The College of Idaho family,” Beal stated. “When visiting campus, everyone was so welcoming and I could sense such pride not only in the athletic department but the school itself. I’m grateful for the opportunity to join such a respected institution.”
A native of Lovell, Wyo., Beal was an assistant coach for two seasons at Eastern Washington and spent one year at Snow College before returning to her home state. At NWC, her teams were among the top of the NJCAA in academics, winning the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association team GPA award in 2016 (3.575) and had countless NJCAA scholar-athlete award winners.
“While coaching at Northwest College, academics were always very important to our program and I feel that those same type of student-athletes can be recruited to C of I,” Beal said. “We will want to recruit high-character athletes that not only excel on the basketball court but become great role models in the community.”
Beal was a standout prep and college player – winning a state title at Lovell High in 2000; earning Wyoming 1A-2A Player of the Year honors in 2001; earning Wyoming Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year and NJCAA All-America honors at Northwest College in 2003; earning All Mid-Continent Conference honors at Southern Utah University in 2005; and this winter was inducted into the Lovell High School Hall of Fame.
A 2005 graduate of Southern Utah University, with a physical education degree, Beal received her master’s degree in Human Movement and Sports Conditioning from A.T. Still University in 2008.
“Especially taking over a program where the majority of players are coming back, I feel the most important thing for me to do is start building relationships with our players and getting to know our strengths and weaknesses as a team.”
“It’s our hope for all of our athletic programs to compete for championships year in and year out,” Rossi said. “I know Coach Beal will fit the C of I culture and the Caldwell community and will bring our women’s basketball program back to national prominence.”
