UW-Stout has named three finalists to be interviewed for the head women’s basketball coach position. The three finalists are Holly Spoo, assistant women’s basketball coach at McKendree University; Hannah Iverson, director of player development of women’s basketball at UW-Green Bay; and Nate Oakland, assistant women’s basketball coach at North Dakota State University.
Holly Spoo
Spoo, a New Richmond, Wis., native, has coached at NCAA Division I, II and III levels, and is currently an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division II McKendree University, a program that recently transitioned to the NCAA Division II. Prior to coming to McKendree, Spoo was an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville for the 2015-16 season.
Spoo was a standout player at UW-Oshkosh, earning WIAC player of the year honors in 1998, was a first team pick in 1997 and an honorable mention pick in 1996, the season the Titans went 31-1 in winning the NCAA Division III title. Spoo earned Kodak All-America honors in 1998 and was selected to the WIAC Centennial All-Time team. She was inducted into the UW-Oshkosh Hall of Fame in 2011.
Spoo began her coaching career at UW-Oshkosh as women’s basketball student assistant. She was an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division II Nebraska-Omaha from 1999-2004. Spoo was an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division II Wayne State College and at NCAA Division I UW-Milwaukee.
Spoo earned her bachelor’s degree in Education, Biology and Secondary Education from UW-Oshkosh and her master’s degree in Exercise Science from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
Hannah Iverson
Iverson, an Eau Claire, Wis., native, is currently the director of player development for women’s basketball at UW-Green Bay, a position she has held since October, 2016. As well as working directly with the team, Iverson manages the program’s operating budget, coordinates team travel, co-directs summer camps and clinics and handles all aspects of team film. Iverson held a similar position – director of basketball operations – at the University of Illinois from 2014-16.
Iverson spent one year at NAIA member Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa, as an assistant women’s basketball coach for the 2013-14 school year. Iverson was in charge of guard development in a season where she helped the Saints to the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions tournament championship, earning Ashford a berth in the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship tournament, the first conference title and appearance in the NAIA D-II tournament in Saints history.
A member of the UW-Green Bay women’s basketball team from 2008-12, Iverson finished her career in the top 10 for games played as the Phoenix posed a 122-13 record over her four years. The team was 68-4 in Horizon League play and advanced to the NCAA Division I tournament four times, including one trip to the Sweet 16.
Iverson earned her bachelor’s degree in Human Biology with an emphasis in health science from UW-Green Bay and her master’s degree in Organizational Management from Ashford University.
Nate Oakland
Oakland, a Cedar Falls, Iowa, native, recently completed his first season as an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA Division I North Dakota State University. Prior to arriving at North Dakota State, Oakland was the head women’s basketball coach at Coe College for two seasons from 2015-17.
A University of Northern Iowa graduate, Oakland began his collegiate coaching career at the University of Minnesota-Morris, serving as an assistant women’s basketball coach and as the men’s and women’s tennis head coach. Oakland returned to his alma mater as an assistant women’s basketball coach for the Division I program from 2006-09. Oakland was the assistant women’s basketball coach at Coe from 2009-11 and at Wartburg College from 2011-15. Oakland was also the men’s head golf coach at Wartburg from 2011-15.
Oakland earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Oakland earned his master’s degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in sports psychology from the the University of Northern Iowa.
