The Virginia native comes to New Orleans with over ten years of coaching experience both at the high school and collegiate level.
Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball head coach Kellie Kennedy announced today that Travis Ponton has been added to her coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Ponton comes to the Wolf Pack after spending one year as a national girl’s basketball talent evaluator at Blue Star Media out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his position with Blue Star Media, Ponton traveled the country and evaluated top high school and travel team prospects while maintaining a nationwide talent database.
He comes to Loyola with over ten years of coaching experience both at the high school and collegiate level, with his most recent stop being an assistant women’s basketball coach at NCAA DI Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina. With the Buccaneers, Ponton was in charge of handling team travel, recruiting and camp preparations while assisting with all other aspects of the program. As a member of head coach Fred Applin’s staff, Ponton helped lead the Buccaneers to a 14-17 overall record during the 2015-16 season highlighted by a first round victory in the Big South Tournament – marking the first postseason victory for the squad in four years.
Prior to his time in Charleston, Ponton acted as the Director of Women’s Basketball Operations at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland before taking the assistant coach position at Southeastern Louisiana University in May of 2014.
A Virginia native, Ponton spend five years climbing through the high school ranks culminating with a three-year stint as an assistant girl’s basketball and soccer coach at Colonial Heights High School in Colonial Heights, Virginia.
Ponton graduated Magna Cum Laude from Radford University in 2009 with a B.S. in Media Studies and he is currently working on a M.S. in Physical Education and Exercise Science at Virginia Commonwealth University.
