Millsaps Athletics announced that Temaine Wright has joined the women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach for the 2017-18 season. Wright joins the Majors after spending four seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Schreiner University in Texas.
While at Schreiner, Wright led the Mountaineers to more wins from 2013-17 than the program had won over the previous 14 seasons in the Division III era. He was named the 2015-16 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) coach of the year, and led Schreiner to a school record three consecutive conference tournament semifinal appearances. During his tenure with the Mountaineers they set many program records including the most conference victories in a season with 10, and the most postseason wins with four. Wright saw two of his players earn first team all-conference recognition, three named conference-player-of-the-week, and 33 earn academic awards. Wright began at Schreiner as an assistant women’s basketball coach in 2010.
“I am very excited to have Temaine join our coaching staff,” said Justin LeBlanc, head women’s basketball coach at Millsaps. “We are beyond fortunate to have someone with his experience and reputation be a part of our program. I have known and competed against Coach Wright for years and have gained a tremendous amount of respect for his coaching ability, work ethic, and passion for the game. To have a former Division III coach of the year winner help lead our program is something we are all thrilled about and we cannot wait to get started.”
Prior to Schreiner, Wright was an assistant men’s basketball coach for his alma mater, the University of Texas at Dallas, during the 2009-10 season. He helped the team achieve the conferences number one ranking for field goal percentage, scoring defense, defensive rebounding, and free throw percentage en route to a regular season conference championship.
A 2009 graduate of UT Dallas, Wright earned his degree in history. During his playing career with the Comets, he was a co-captain and the starting point guard on the 2008-09 team that won a program record 26 games and the American Southwest Conference (ASC) tournament where he was named MVP. His team also advanced to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III tournament that year.
