The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg is pleased to announce that Hayley Schaetzle has been named its Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Schaetzle comes to Pitt-Greensburg from the University at Buffalo (UB), the largest campus in the State University of New York’s (SUNY) 64-campus system, where she served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Women’s Basketball program.
“We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to bring Hayley to the University to lead our women’s basketball program. She comes to us from the NCAA Division I level (University at Buffalo), but her roots are DIII,” said Tony Berich, Director of Athletics. “She played at the DIII level at Manchester University and was on the staff at fellow AMCC member Penn State Behrend. This familiarity with the conference and her outstanding knowledge of the game, along with her work ethic and desire to lead, will serve her well in the pursuit of an AMCC Championship.”
As Director of Basketball Operations, Schaetzle planned and directed all aspects of team travel, practice time, hotels, transportation, and means. Her responsibilities included directing team managers and organizing all clock work at practices and shoot-around drills. Schaetzle also served as the academic liaison with the women’s basketball academic advisor to achieve a Team GPA exceeding a 3.0 each semester.
In Schaetzle’s first season with UB Bulls, the women’s basketball team defeated Central Michigan to capture the school’s first Mid-American Conference Championship and advanced to the 2016 NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.
“I would like to thank both Dr. Smith (campus president) and Mr. Berich for the opportunity and for the confidence they have in me to lead the Pitt-Greensburg Women’s Basketball program. I am excited to work with high-character young women in developing a culture where Bobcat basketball finishes at the top of the AMCC in the pursuit of competing annually in the NCAA Tournament,” said Schaetzle.
Schaetzle is familiar with the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) from spending two seasons (2013-2014 and 2014-2015) as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Penn State Behrend, a fellow member of the AMCC. While there, Schaetzle coached the Lions’ guards and helped to recruit players and scout opponents—all while working with Roz Fornari, the winningest coach in the Penn State Behrend program’s history.
When Fornari retired in the 2014 spring semester, Schaetzle was named the Lions’ Interim Women’s Basketball Head Coach. She developed a summer workout program for current and incoming student-athletes and served as camp director for multiple Penn State Behrend Girls’ Basketball Camps, as well as their Varsity/Junior Varsity High School Girls’ Team Shootout.
Schaetzle played collegiately at Manchester University (formerly Manchester College) in Indiana where she was a varsity letter-winner as a freshman point-guard. A career-ending injury during her sophomore season forced her off of the court, but she stayed involved with the team, assisting the coaching staff with film exchange as well as recruiting efforts. Schaetzle also was an assistant seventh grade coach at Manchester Jr/Sr High School during the 2011-12 season. The following season, she served as the school’s head coach.
As a student-athlete, Schaetzle sought out professional development participating in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum held in Indianapolis, IN, where she was one of 303 student-athletes chosen to attend out of 1,100 nominations.
A native of Chico, Ca, Schaetzle graduated magna cum laude from Manchester University with a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise Science and Fitness with minors in Coaching and Spanish. She earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Penn State Behrend.
