UAB head women’s basketball coach Randy Norton announced the addition of Michael Scott Jr., to the Blazers’ women’s basketball staff on Wednesday. Scott joins the Blazer family after serving as a graduate student with Mizzou Women’s Basketball.
“I am extremely excited to start a new phase in my life and join Coach Norton and the UAB women’s basketball program,” Scott said. “He has had a major influence on me early in my career and I look forward to learning more from him under his daily leadership.
“I am also thrilled about the opportunity to work and grow with such a talented roster of student-athletes and athletics department staff. Special thank you to those who have helped and pushed me to this point in my journey. I can’t wait to make an impact and get involved in the Birmingham community.”
Scott played an integral part in a Mizzou program that advanced to the Second Round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, won 22 games for the first time in 32 seasons and earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2006 and victory since 2001.
“I had the opportunity to work with Michael for three of his six years at Mizzou,” Norton said. “He is a young, hungry coach with a great work ethic, and I’m excited about what he will add to our program. He will be a dynamic recruiter and his knowledge and understanding of our system is an added bonus Michael brings to our staff.”
With Mizzou, Scott produced video breakdowns and highlight packages for each contest, in addition to duties with opponent film, the scout team, guard breakdown and marketing for the Tigers Paws youth program. He originally joined the program as a scout team player and leader during his undergraduate tenure from 2011-14.
Scott, a former standout at Mary Institute and Country Day School (MICDS), was the 2010 ABC League Player of the Year. He earned a spot on the 2010 Class 4 All-State team and led MICDS to a Class 4 district championship.
He has coaching experience at MICDS, Christian Brothers College (CBC) High School and Missouri-St. Louis basketball camps, being an apprentice to Dennis Beckett at the St. Louis Basketball Academy and providing individual workouts to numerous collegiate, high school and middle school players.
In 2014, Scott earned a dual emphasis undergraduate degree in Finance and Banking and Real Estate from Missouri’s Trulaske College of Business. He graduated with his master’s degree in Educational, School and Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Positive Coaching in 2016.
