Picott Named Assistant Coach at Houston

Rutgers Scarlet Knight Hall of Famer Victoria Picott has been named as the newest member of the Houston Cougar Women’s Basketball coaching staff, head coach Ronald Hughey announced Tuesday.

“Vicky is a great person with a wonderful passion for the game and is an outstanding teacher of the game, specifically post play,” head coach Ronald Hughey said. “We are so fortunate to have her bring her professional playing experience, and her basketball knowledge to our program.”

Picott most recently served as an assistant coach at Wagner College in New York, after spending 11 seasons on the bench at Vanderbilt. During her time with the Commodores, Picott helped lead the Commodores to three SEC Tournament Championships, four trips to the Sweet 16 and saw her team finish in the Top-25 national rankings eight times.

While in Nashville, Picott played a huge roll in the recruiting of six future WNBA Draft Picks, highlighted by 2007 Chicago Sky first-round pick Carla Thomas and Chantelle Anderson who was the second overall pick of the 2003 WNBA draft by the Sacramento Monarchs.

Picott began her coaching career in 1991-92 as a student-assistant at her alma mater, Rutgers, before moving to the high school ranks in 1993-94 as the freshman girls basketball coach at Hightstown High School, Picott’s high school alma mater, in Central New Jersey.

Picott would return to the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Drexel for the 1994-95 season before making coaching stops at Temple (1995-2000) and Xavier (2000-02) before making the move to Vanderbilt.

During her playing career, Picott left a lasting legacy at Rutgers, graduating in 1992 ranked fourth in school history in points (1,792), third in rebounds (1,029) and fifth in steals. In 1988, Picott was named Atlantic-10 Freshman of the Year before, while earning a starting role she would carry throughout the next four seasons.

Following her senior season, Picott was named New Jersey Sports Writers Association Player of the Year as well as a District II Regional All-American. On April 26, 1998 Picott was inducted into the Rutgers Hall of Fame.

After her stellar career at Rutgers, Picott was selected to two Olympic Festival Teams in 1987 and 1989 and played for the Junior World Championship team that won a Gold Medal in Saw Paulo, Brazil. From there Picott began a career in the Women’s Professional Basketball Association in Luxembourg where her team, Etzella advanced to the Luxembourg Cup Championship.
