Purdue Hires Assistant

Purdue women’s basketball head coach Sharon Versyp announced the hiring of Matthew Layman as the new video coordinator for the Boilermakers on Monday. Layman comes to Purdue after stops at Heidelberg University and Case Western Reserve, and was a student-athlete at Manchester University in Northeast Indiana.

“We’re excited to have Matthew join our staff and become part of the Purdue women’s basketball family,” said Versyp. “He has a fantastic basketball mind and between his experience as a student-athlete and working in various roles in athletics, he brings a perspective that will help our program.”

Layman was a two-sport athlete at Manchester, participating in men’s basketball and track and field during his time with the Spartans. He still holds the school record in the 60-meter hurdles, and was a conference placewinner in several events, including the high jump and triple jump.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in athletic training in 2012, Layman joined the Heidelberg University women’s basketball staff as a graduate assistant. In three seasons with the Knights, he served in a variety of roles including recruiting, video services, strength and conditioning and academic advising, and filled in as a co-interim head coach in the Spring of 2013. Their top season in his tenure was a 12-14 mark in 2013-14, where they saw an impressive jump in their overall win total and qualified for the conference tournament for the first time in four years. While at Heidelberg he also added a Master’s degree in education. Most recently Layman worked at Case Western Reserve as an assistant athletic trainer, serving with the Spartans’ men’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball programs.

Layman has been a regular at a variety of basketball summer camps for the last four years, including the Boilermakers’ regiment that coaches various age groups. He’s also traveled to Colorado, Eastern Kentucky and helped at Heidelberg during his tenure there. He was the head coach of The Training Area boys varsity team in 2011, leading his squad to an American Youth Basketball Tour national runner-up finish.
