The College at Brockport is pleased to announce the next head coach of the women’s basketball program, Corinne Jones. Jones was selected from a large pool of candidates based on her experience at multiple levels in the collegiate ranks and a desire to make Brockport a perennial contender in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
“Next season, my vision for the women’s basketball program would be to finish in the top six of the SUNYAC and advance to the conference tournament,” said Jones. “In future years, our program will consistently advance to the SUNYAC tournament and compete for championships.”
Jones spent the past seven seasons at the Division I level as an assistant coach with the University at Buffalo from 2008-2010 before spending the past five years at Niagara as the associate head coach including a stint as the interim head coach.
The former Bowdoin College basketball star captained two teams to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2001-02 & 2002-03 and also was a member of the Sweet Sixteen team from 2000-01. Jones began her collegiate coaching career in 2005 with the University of Rochester as an assistant before earning a head coaching position with Genesee Community College in 2007.
When asked why she chose Brockport Jones replied, “It was very clear to me during my on campus interview that women’s basketball matters at Brockport. The administrative support, resources, and facilities are all in place to aid in building a successful program. The College at Brockport has several appealing academic majors for young women and attracts students from a variety of backgrounds. I believe Brockport women’s basketball can experience success in the near future and sustain that success over time. I’d like to thank Erick Hart, Katy Wilson and the search committee for awarding me with the opportunity as I’m honored to be the next head women’s basketball coach and lead the Brockport program.”
Last season at Niagara, Jones helped lead the Purple Eagles past Manhattan in the first round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships advancing to the MAAC Quarterfinals.
“Jones has a vision and a strong history of recruiting top end talent on both the court and in the classroom,” said Brockport Athletic Director Erick Hart. “Throughout her career in coaching she has executed the Brockport Athletics’ mission of developing the student and the athlete to make a well-rounded individual and we are very excited to add her to our Brockport coaching staff.”
The Niagara Women’s basketball team had seven members named to the 2014-15 MAAC All-Academic team. Jones was a mentor and recruit of several outstanding student-athletes. She recruited the 2013-14 MAAC rookie of the year as well as mentored several MAAC All-Academic and All-Conference members.
“My top priority as the head women’s basketball coach at Brockport will be our student-athletes and their collegiate experience,” explained Jones. “I believe in developing the whole student-athlete, the person, the student, and the basketball player. Our student-athletes will be committed in the classroom, on the basketball court, and in the community.”
