Wake Forest women’s basketball and head coach Megan Gebbia announced the hiring of 25-year coaching veteran Darrick Gibbs as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025-26 season.
In his role with the Demon Deacon program, Gibbs will serve as the primary coach for wing players while also assisting in game planning, scouting and recruiting efforts.
“I am really excited to add Darrick to the staff,” Coach Gebbia said. “He has a wealth of experience coaching including 11 seasons in the ACC and an additional eight years as a head coach at North Florida. He has coached at a number of schools throughout the Southeast and the connections that he has will help us in recruiting. When he arrived on campus, he connected well with our administration, staff and the team. It was easy to see him fitting in and helping make a big difference for us as we get ready for our fourth season as a staff at Wake Forest.”
Gibbs, a 25-year veteran of the coaching profession, most recently coached at Tulane during the 2024-25 season, but also has eight years of experience as a head coach at North Florida from 2015-23. Gibbs also comes to Winston-Salem with 11 years of coaching experience in the ACC at both Clemson and Miami.
During his lone season in Tulane, he helped lead Tulane to a 17-13 record, a five-win improvement from the previous season and the Green WAve also finished above .500 in American Athletic Conference play.
He came to Tulane after spending the 2023-24 campaign as the assistant coach at Clemson where he aided the program to 12 victories and an All-ACC selection for Amari Robinson.
Prior to his time with the Tigers, Gibbs had an eight-year stint at the helm of the North Florida women’s basketball program.
Gibbs was named the UNF program’s second head coach in April of 2015. While at UNF, the Ospreys set the school record for points in a game and team assists, tallying 126 and 43 respectively on Nov. 13, 2021 against Trinity Baptist. Ally Knights posted the most assists in a game in 18 years for any NCAA player, dishing out 20. The Ospreys posted the best finish in program history in 2021, placing third in the ASUN and finished above .500 for the third straight season.
Gibbs produced the Ospreys’ first-ever WNBA Draft Pick (Jazz Bond, 31st pick, Dallas Wings), who also became the first Osprey to earn a pair of ASUN Defensive Player of the Year laurels after repeating in 2021-22, earning ASUN All-Academic, ASUN First Team and CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition in the same season.
Prior to leading the UNF program, Gibbs served a 10-year stint as an assistant coach at the Miami.
During his decade at Miami, Gibbs helped guide the Hurricanes to six-consecutive postseason appearances including four trips to the NCAA. He was a vital piece of Miami’s recent success with responsibility for player development along with handling scheduling. In addition, his recruiting efforts helped the ‘Canes earn three Top-25 classes during his tenure. At UM, Gibbs recruited and mentored several players that have continued their playing careers professionally in the WNBA and overseas.
Gibbs joined the UM coaching ranks prior to the 2005-06 season, and helped lead UM to a 17-13 record and an appearance at the 2006 WNIT in his first season with the Hurricanes. During his time at Miami, the squad captured the ACC Championship in 2011 and reached the WNIT Championship game in 2010. The Hurricanes posted 20 or more victories in five of the last six seasons including a 20-13 record this year highlighted by an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to his arrival at UM, Gibbs served as an assistant coach for two seasons (2003-05) at Charlotte alongside former Clemson head coach Amanda Butler and under former Miami head coach Katie Meier. While at Charlotte, Gibbs helped lead the 49ers to two WNIT appearances, including Charlotte’s first postseason victory with a 78-71 win over Clemson in the 2004 WNIT. The 49ers put together a 39-23 record in those two seasons, including a 22-9 mark in 2004-05 to tie for the third-most single-season wins in Charlotte history.
As one of the 49ers’ main recruiting contacts, Gibbs played a major role in putting together their 33rd-ranked 2004 recruiting class during his first season at Charlotte.
Gibbs joined the Charlotte coaching staff in 2003 following a two-year stay at the College of Charleston where he served as an assistant coach from 2001-03. Prior to his stint with the Cougars, Gibbs spent three seasons at Wofford College. As an undergraduate, he served as a student assistant with the Terriers from 1998-00, and remained with the team as an assistant during the 2000-01 season.
Originally from Pawleys Island, S.C., Gibbs received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wofford in 2000. He and his wife D’Erica were married in April of 2009 and have two daughters, Daisha and Desiree and a son, Darrick Jr.
